First Brainteaser:

YOUR AGE BY CHOCOLATE MATH

This is pretty neat.

DON'T CHEAT BY SCROLLING DOWN FIRST!

It takes less than a minute. Work this out as you read it.

Be sure you don't read the bottom until you've worked it out!

1. First of all, pick the number of times a week that you would like to have chocolate
(more than once but less than 10) each week.

2. Multiply this number by 2

3. Add 5

4. Multiply it by 50.

5. If you have already had your birthday this year (after January 1 2006) add 1756 and if you haven't, add 1755.

6. Now subtract the four digit year that you were born.

You should have a three digit number.

...the first digit of this was your original number... (how many times you want to have chocolate each week)...

The next two numbers are...

YOUR AGE!

Second Brainteaser:

How Attentive Are You?

The average person only gets 7 right in the following test. This can be more difficult than it looks - it just shows how little we pay attention to things!

There are 25 questions about things we see every day or have known about all our lives. How many can you get right? These little simple questions are harder than you think. It just shows how little we pay attention to the commonplace things of life.

RULES: No cheating! No looking around! No getting out of your chair! No using anything on or in your desk or computer and no using Google!

Can you beat 20?? (The average is 7)

Write down your answers and check answers (on the bottom) AFTER completing all the questions. REMEMBER NO CHEATING!!! (It doesn't matter if you cheat, actually, because if
you have to cheat, then you don't know the answer, thus, you've already missed the question!)

LET'S JUST SEE HOW OBSERVANT YOU REALLY ARE. - If not, just have fun!

Here we go!

1. On a standard traffic light, is the green on the top or bottom?

2. How many states are there in the USA? (Don't laugh, some people

don't know.)

3. In which hand is the Statue of Liberty's torch?

4. What six colors are on the classic Campbell's soup label?

5. What two numbers on the telephone dial don't have letters by them?

6. When you walk does your left arm swing with your right or left leg?

Don't you dare get up to see!)

7. How many matches are in a standard pack?

8. On the United States flag is the top stripe red or white?

9. What is the lowest number on the FM dial? (Don't look at that

dial!)

10. Which way does water go down the drain, counter or clockwise? (Get

out of the bathroom!)

11. Which way does a "no smoking" sign's slash run?

12. How many channels on a VHF TV dial?

13. On which side of a women's blouse are the buttons?

14. Which way do fans rotate?

15 How many sides does a stop sign have?

16. Do books have even-numbered pages on the right or left side?

17 How many lug nuts are on a standard car wheel?

18. How many sides are there on a standard pencil?

19. Sleepy, Happy, Sneezy, Grumpy, Dopey, Doc. Who's missing?

20. How many hot dog buns are in a standard package?

21 On which playing card is the card maker's trademark?

22 On which side of a Venetian blind is the cord that adjusts the

opening between the slats?

23. There are 12 buttons on a touch tone phone. What 2 symbols bear
no

digits?

24. How many curves are there in the standard paper clip?

25. Does a merry-go-round turn counter or clockwise?

First one is just circular math.

Second: I scored 16. I got robbed by the Statue of Liberty one and the VHF one.

I got 19, but some of them are trick questions. Not all books are numbered the same. Likewise, carousels turn different ways in different countries.

Oh, also, it's hardly a matter of "being attentive" to know anything about VHF dials these days. It's more a matter of "How many old people do you know?"

18. I did it in a hurry.
How could the average be seven? Was it tested on Windows users?

So many of those questions vary depending on the country that I didn't bother!

Those were dead-easy, but I got caught on the Snow White one (WTF?), lowest FM frequency on the dial, Campbell's soup colours, and matches in a standard pack.

A semi-photographic memory and some common-sense thinking really helps. :-P

Not bad, but there were just a few I totally bombed (Venetial blinds???)

Any ramblings are entirely my own, and do not represent those of my employers, coworkers, friends, or species

Be sure you don't read the bottom until you've worked it out!

1. First of all, pick the number of times a week that you would like to have chocolate

Okay, I pick x. I would like to have chocolate x number of times each week.

2. Multiply this number by 2
2x

3. Add 5
2x + 5

4. Multiply it by 50.
100x + 250

5. If you have already had your birthday this year (after January 1 2006) add 1756 and if you haven't, add 1755.
100x + 250 + 1755 (or 1756)

= 100x + 2005 (or 2006)

6. Now subtract the four digit year that you were born.
100x + 2005 (or 2006) - birth year

= 100x - (2005 or 2006 - birth year)

= 100x + age

Not so amazing anymore, is it?

You should have a three digit number.

...the first digit of this was your original number... (how many times you want to have chocolate each week)...

The next two numbers are...

YOUR AGE!
Well, only if your age is a two-digit number. Since the chocolate number is only shifted two decimal places to the left by multiplying it by 100, if you were 100 years old, it would be messed up.

Ticking sound coming from a .pkg package? Don't let the .bom go off! Inspect it first with Pacifist. Macworld - five mice!

Attention? More like having too little to do!
7. How many matches are in a standard pack?
We can't have standards for things like spreadsheet file formats, but we get them for matches?

10. Which way does water go down the drain, counter or clockwise? (Get
out of the bathroom!)
Which hemisphere?

14. Which way do fans rotate?
Depends on which direction you want the air to go. All the fans in my house run both directions based on a switch.

15 How many sides does a stop sign have?
Well, it also has a front and a back. While relatively thin, it is a three dimensional object.

17 How many lug nuts are on a standard car wheel?
There is no standard here!

19. Sleepy, Happy, Sneezy, Grumpy, Dopey, Doc. Who's missing?
What does this have to do with paying attention?

22 On which side of a Venetian blind is the cord that adjusts the
opening between the slats?
Well, in my house they are on the other side. Perhaps pick question that has a consistent answer.

24. How many curves are there in the standard paper clip?
Ask a NASCAR fan and the answer might double.

Chocolate less than ten times per week? What kind of commie hell-hole does the author of this come from?
Been inclined to wander... off the beaten track.
That's where there's thunder... and the wind shouts back.

Most houses have those now, cuts down on heating/cooling costs.

As for "standard lug nut pattern" ...... I don't even know where to start.
