Sure, that's convenient.
But are viruses & spyware also pre-installed?
Or do have to connect to internet and wait up to 2.3 minutes for them to download.

Actually, if you have the firewall active and the latest security patches, XP is fairly safe.
Personally, I'd want to run just one program on XP, and that's Quicken, so 99% of the time I'd just be in OS X anyway.
I still need that iBook replacement though before I buy an Intel Mac...

Boot Camp and Microsoft Windows XP Disclaimers
BOOT CAMP IS BETA, TIME-LIMITED SOFTWARE MEANT FOR EVALUATION PURPOSES ONLY. THIS SOFTWARE SHOULD NOT BE USED IN A COMMERCIAL OPERATING ENVIRONMENT OR WITH IMPORTANT DATA. BEFORE INSTALLING THE APPLE SOFTWARE, YOU SHOULD BACK UP ALL OF YOUR DATA AND REGULARLY BACK UP DATA WHILE USING THE APPLE SOFTWARE.
Boot Camp is beta software that may be incomplete and may contain inaccuracies or errors that could cause failures or loss of data. THE USE OF THE BOOT CAMP SOFTWARE IS AT YOUR SOLE RISK AND THE ENTIRE RISK AS TO SATISFACTORY QUALITY, PERFORMANCE, ACCURACY AND EFFORT IS WITH YOU.
Boot camp is public beta time-limited software and, as a result, significant limitations and risks exist in using Macs preconfigured in the manner described above. Customers should only purchase and/or use Macs preconfigured with Windows XP for evaluation purposes. Customers may not be able to use the Windows XP software after the time-limited license of Boot Camp expires. PC Mall, Inc. and its subsidiaries disclaim any responsibility for the customers purchase and/or use of such Macs. Before purchase customers should read additional disclaimers and additional information about the limitations and risks of Boot Camp and Windows XP installed on an Intel-based Mac at www.apple.com/bootcamp and Apple’s software license agreement for Boot Camp public beta. By purchasing a Mac from MacMall in any of the above configurations, customer acknowledges that he or she has read and agrees to all the terms and conditions of the Apple Software License Agreement. MacMall may discontinue sales of Macs pre-installed with Windows XP at any time, for any reason, and with no prior notice.
Windows running on a Mac is like Windows running on a PC. That means it'll be subject to the same attacks that plague the Windows world. So be sure to keep it updated with the latest Microsoft Windows security fixes.
The Apple Remote Control (IR), Apple Wireless (Bluetooth) keyboard or mouse, Apple USB Modem, MacBook Pro's sudden motion sensor, MacBook Pro's ambient light sensor, and built-in iSight camera will not function correctly when running Windows.
The Windows XP and Mac OS X operating systems handle your computer's date and time information differently, so the date and time may be different when you switch operating systems.
Currently, Boot Camp Beta does not allow an Apple keyboard to type a Euro symbol in Windows XP. Consider pasting the symbol from a different document instead.
There is no ability to change the partition size once it is selected unless you delete the Windows partition, create a new one, and then reinstall windows. In other words, be sure to pick the size you want the FIRST time.
Certain Microsoft software products may use technological measures for copy protection. In such event, you will not be able to use the product if you do not fully comply with product activation procedures. Product activation procedures and Microsoft's privacy policy will be detailed during initial launch of the products, or upon certain reinstallations of the software products or reconfigurations of the computer, and may be completed by Internet or telephone (toll charges may apply).

That's all well and good, but they need to include a "Plain English" one too.
"We installed Boot Camp and Windows for you. Apple did not preinstall it. Apple will not provide technical support for Windows." Plain and simple. Then point to the big legalese version that nobody will read anyway.

Yeah. It's especially weird-looking because the ones with Windows pre-installed don't really tout themselves as also having OS X installed.

Again, it is MacMall offering to preinstall Windows for people. That needs to be clearly spelled out. Otherwise, people will call Apple for Windows support and get upset when Apple tells them no.
"But my machine CAME WITH Windows! How can you not support it??"

Yellow Dog Linux has been shipping preinstalled on Macs for quite some time, and you can be sure that Apple wasn't installing Linux.

I am so pissed off. I bought a graphite toilet seat iBook way back when. When I took it home and opened it I thought it sucked and took it back. The shop said Apple won't take a Mac back if the box has been opened so I was lumbered with the POS for a month and sold it in the paper.

Well, it's true in the sense that if you've opened it, there may be a restocking charge if you want to return it. Certain Apple demands this, and most stores will too.

You´re right! I´m not so sure anymore that this all will turn out OK. In a german Mac discussion forum we had several cases of potential "switchers" that:not seemed to intend to install OS X

If you have the firewall active, the latest security patches installed, and you don't run as the Owner, XP is fairly safe. This last step is absolutely critical, but unfortunately the current Windows computing culture actively discourages it. Many programs are so incompetently tested that they refuse to run as a non-Owner, despite there being no legitimate need for such privileges.

I TOLD YOU SO!
I told you in another thread that soon Macs would be Windows boxes...
analogika - you said:
You can already hack Mac OS X to run on a generic Intel box - you have been able to for over half a year now. It's a hack, though, and Apple will never make it an option nor support it.
You can eat your words!
In this thread I said
It's all the same now...
Mac OS is now just another Microsoft cash cow.
HA HA HA!
 to you analogika.

Cody, analogika's statement below is correct (at least currently):
You can already hack Mac OS X to run on a generic Intel box - you have been able to for over half a year now. It's a hack, though, and Apple will never make it an option nor support it.
ie. Apple has not released OS X for generic Intel boxes. This has not changed.
Furthermore, I do not see how your statement below follows:
It's all the same now...
Mac OS is now just another Microsoft cash cow

Yes, the end of Apple is upon us yet again. Its only the 3,405,603,234th time its happened too. Oh my, what will we do when Microsoft kills Apple? The horror!
Come on people, stop with the Death of Apple™ predictions already. Haven't you people learned anything from being so called Mac fans for so long? Do you think that Steve and the gang over at headquarters were hangin out one day drinkin some beers when someone said, "Hey, I've got a quarter, lets flip it. Heads we let Windows run on our hardware, tails we don't. Heads! Woohooey!"
Apple isn't going anywhere. This has a chance to be huge for Apple, and if it isn't huge they will reel it back in and handle it. Either way you slice it, Apple has it under control. Be patient and let this play out for a while before you start shouting crap like "HA HA HAR! I TOLD YOU APPLE WAS DOOMED!! HAHAHAH!! I WIN TEH PRIZE!!"

Besides, Boot Camp is prerelease beta software that will expire at some point. I'm sure MacMall is violating some agreement by doing this.

Yes, yes, yes. But it's Apple who created Boot Camp in the first place, ain't it?

Yes it is, but that doesn't mean the end of OS X. It's not installed by default, and developers can't count on people having Windows in order to run their software.
We can certainly vote with our wallets and say if there's no Mac native version then we won't buy your software.
Besides, Boot Camp may be totally different in Leopard. Let's wait and see what Apple has in store for us before going around and saying "Mac OS X is dead! The sky is falling!"
It is WAY to soon to be saying things like that.

OS X is dead. Now it's just a matter of having the wake.
Admittedly, I'm a little biased b/c every time I try to copy a file it changes the creation date. Little things like "lack of effective archiving" tend to grind on me.

Then Apple will lose its core group of customers and will atrophy itself into non-existence. This won't happen. And I'll come in here a year from now with a thread that states "I TOLD YOU SO".
