Did anyone know that Google bought SketchUp?

Apparently they did. They're going to be canning Mac support and going Windows only.
Wasn't SketchUp originally written for the Mac?
I saw a demo at Macworld in January and tried it out. It's truely one of the easiest 3D/CAD programs I've ever used. The interface was nice and it made sense, a lot like how Maya isn't.
Oh well.

Forgot to mention that they're going to be using it in conjunction with Google Earth. You'll be able to make your house or buildings with it and stick them on the maps. Sounds like fun.

"Another important note: for now, only Windows versions of Google SketchUp (free) and the plug-in for SketchUp Pro 5 are available (I can hear Mac users putting dog poop in the mail as I write this...). We're working on the Mac versions of both, and they should be ready soon. I'm a Mac user myself—know that I'll be pestering (I mean, encouraging) the team on everyone's behalf. Thanks for waiting!"

I used it to make illustrations for my thesis. It really rocks.
Does this mean they have disabled the download of the Macintosh version?

That's always how it starts. Then they'll fire the guy or something becuase it costs too much money to support the Mac version. You'll see.

Right, Google has such a terrible record of supporting the Mac.

They do.
Actually they just leave everything in Beta forever.

Google's record of Mac support is indeed poor; they're usually considered second-class citizens at best. However, their support isn't completely nonexistent either. If they say it's coming then it's probably coming, but holding your breath is probably not a good idea.

How many people doubted that Google Earth would ever make it to the Mac?
Exactly the same situation here.

The point is it came later and is still in beta. You'd think with all of Googles money they could release them at the same time and not keep things in beta for 3 years.

So the point is, Google generally supports the Mac with its products. This talk of "That's always how it starts — then they'll fire the guy or something becuase it costs too much money to support the Mac version" is actually contrary to how it usually is.

Unlike Google Earth or any other G-app, SketchUp was actually available as a Mac product before the acquisition.
They're promising a Mac version soon and I think they'll rather embrace the developers' Mac expertise, as they've been looking for Mac devs anyway.

Yes, and despite that long history, it has already slipped to "Windows-first, Mac-eventually" status. That is not a promising sign.

Google Earth is the only app Google has available for Mac, it is still in beta and the advanced versions are still Windows only. It's also a Qt-app. Their Mac support isn't particularly stellar.
