The Internet has changed many things.
One of the phenomenon that I've noticed is what I call the forum "know it all". The forum "Nazi" but that of course too harsh. We all know the type. They patrol the boards, picking on the guy with 13 post, and then with their post, number 3,789, the proceed to destroy the person so they never dare post again.
The people that take time to answer people's threads, but instead of just helping them, they belittle them, tell them to do a search, or just basically insult them, which usaully results in a flame war. Of coures there 100 word angry post, could have easily been answered in 10 words, but that would have been too easy.
Forums for whatever topic at hand (this one of course the apple universe) get the same questions and theories or what not, over and over and over. Too many people for that not to happen. And how many unique topics are they? There's been 1000 "Which powerbook to buy" threads. So what? That's what people want to talk about.
I understand the need for moderators, and search features, but this isn't a workplace. I get annoyed at work when people don't try and solve a problem themselves. They just ask me so they don't have to put any effort into looking themselves.
But I feel differently about these forums. I assume the same questions are going to be asked all the time. It's just a fact. That's why we have the forums.
Why are there so many lurkers on this board obsessed with responded and reading every post with the intention (most of the time) to tell people how stupid they are. Or wrong they are. Or should have done this or that. Just answer the question or say nothing. How hard is that?
Not all of the people on this board, are professional forum people.
I know I'm not alone. And I know I'll get attacked my some of the people I'm making fun of.
But it's not just this board, it's all over the Internet. This uber nerds who I invision looking like Dwight from "The Office" that patrol the boards with authority given to themselves. Telling people where to post stuff, how, and why.
At work, I have to answer stupid people's questions. But the good news about the forums is I have a choice. There's no need to attack someone's post if you don't agree with it or figured they should have down more research.
Why can't you just ignore them? Or even better, if you really need to respond, dare I say, answer their questions nicely as possible.

I know where you're coming from. The thing that bothers me the most about this forum (and I say this forum, because this isn't an issue on other forums I participate in) is the "wrong forum" posters.
Someone brings up an issue they're having with their Mac, or they've got a good question, and they just need some clarification ... and rather than helping that person out, someone belittles them and questions their intelligence for posting in the wrong forum. So f***ing what? If you can't help, don't post.
I'm convinced that 99% of the "you're in the wrong forum!1!!`" people don't actually know the answer to the question.

Dude you've only got like 500 post, STFU!
I'm kidding. I generally try to be nice to people, if I think the topic's stupid I generally just won't respond. And rarely will I ever pick on someone for having a low post count. If I ever do it's because they're asserting themselves as if they can talk for the whole forum, when I assure you, nobody can talk to the whole forum. Cause most of us don't agree

There are a lot of wrong assumptions here.
1. That telling someone to search or to post in the right forum is some kind of horrible, unbearable mockery — it's not. It's good advice.
2. That because I'm not getting paid to be here, I should be more tolerant of people wasting my time. This is the opposite of the truth.
3. That letting someone's question go unanswered is more helpful than offering good advice about how to find the answer.

Back in the day (usenet), this used to be known as hitting the "clueless" with a "clue-by-four". It was an annual event started in September when the freshman college students would get their first taste of the internet and act like general asshats.
After AOL became popular, the adage became "it's always September".
Things have slid downhill ever since.
This history lesson brought to you by curmudgeonly old guy.

Well, the people who are mean the way you say are the same people who drove people away from here...people we loved...like WDLove is gone for good. Remember him? The guy who never had a mean thing to say to anyone? Just a nice older guy confined to his home and he was on here all the time. Now he's gone. Chuckit and I got into it because Chuckit liked to point out how "stupid" or "ridiculous" WDLove's posts were. At the end he apologized but you know what? WD left and he's gone and this place isn't as nice. And he's just one of a many that left because of evil and mean-spirited people. I'll admit I've been mean to a couple of people, which I'm sorry for, but for the most part I'm only mean to people when they decide to attack me for some reason. Not my post, but ME.
Good thread.

Good thread.
Cody you do realize that people who attack people in such a way, simple aren't happy with themselves.
I used to get made at these people. Now I just feel sorry for them.
You must really HATE your life to attack someone like WDlove.

Isn't that the truth?
Self-loathing is what it's called.
You're the only one around here that points out when people are being petty with others and for that I thank you. (Well, you and ghporter - he's my favorite mod.)

Not that my shirt is clean of pettiness. I've been the same way.
And I usually amounts to me having a bad day, and not feeling to good about myself.
We all do this. Some more than others.
I don't think the actual act is as bad as not realizing it, and not apologizing to those you lashed out on.
Everyone has faults and does bad things. It's what you do after said things are done that matters most.

Good thread.
??
I mean come on WDloves posts were hardly the on topic posts.
All i ever remember is him either saying "good topic" or "i miss you cody"
This is the internet, where people can be as arrogant and insulting as they want, and there is nothing you can do about them.
Welcome to the internet. Take nothing seriously

WHO CARES what WD had to say?
Unlike YOU and OTHERS he said nothing even mildly offensive.
ALL of his posts were meant to be agreeable. If he asked for me it was because I was trying to help him get a website design together, that's all. Since I work and am sometimes not available via telephone he would come here and ask for me by saying, "I miss chatting, Cody." It was his way of saying, "Can you help me?" He also PMd me but sometimes I wasn't getting PMs so he'd pop in here and ask for my help.
I mean, how petty can you be by picking on WD?
EVERYONE who has been here LONG TERM loved WD. He's up there with the good guys like Kevin/Zimph, Mastrap, Simey, Doofy, rickey, eBuddy, abe (whom I did have a private fight with but whom I know is a smart guy and a nice guy and I regretted our fight), Gator Lager, ThinkInsane, etc. One person who was the biggest ass and seems to be gone temporarily was Captain Obvious. He was the biggest jerk this place has ever had.
Anyway, I wish WD would come back.
It's not the same without him.

Eh that is just making excuses for people that are asshats.
WDlove did nothing wrong. He was one of nicest caring people I've ever met on these forums.
Not surprised NN ran him off though. We will have none of that!

I agree completely with Mallrat!
There are those that troll forums looking for those to harass and berate for a cheap laugh.
I've been a member of MacNN for almost 5 years, yet I have a low post count. Mostly because it’s more often than not worth the time to have some "Dwight" (btw love the show) give some backhanded or snide comment with no insight or relevance.
We all visit MacNN as an avenue to communicate with educated and learning Apple Macintosh enthusiasts. I think we could all practice more civility and patience towards neophytes, forum noob's, and DIY'ers --heck, everyone alike. The golden rule applies to forums I believe.
Excellent thread Mallrat!

can you be any more petty? No offence but you're hardly long term (and why does that matter?!?!?!, thats just as bad as measuring users by post count), and just look how you word your replies to threads! Could you be any more hostile?!
Why dont you just name the members everyone hates so much rather than beating around the bush

People posting in the wrong forum waste your time? Pulleezee...
A) This is the Lounge, a place designed for people to waste their time
B) If the subject is marked "help me with my Tiger problem", you could simply skip it
C) If the subject is ambiguous, you could simply skip it
D) There are non-useful posts even on threads that you might consider to be non-time wasters
E) If your time is so valuable, why are you on a forum anyway?

Hi besson! How are ya?
I agree with your comment: If people are going to be asshats then they should SKIP the topic/subject.

I think the problem here is not simply about WDLove, but it's also about the things I addressed in an earlier thread I made:
- people who are pedantic/anal about pointing out the rules in the Lounge
- people who think that the Lounge is somehow a place where it is a sin for others to "waste their time" in with posts that lack content that the person in question can rubber stamp as being officially useful (e.g. not timeline-able, not a repeat of something discussed earlier, not uncool, etc.)
- people who at the same time are quite happy with the 2093842093th post of the week designed to ogle the latest hot supermodel/celebrity's body (I guess these sorts of posts somehow are substantive and/or cool)

Like I've said before, the rules make much more sense in the technical forum areas than they do the lounge. In the lounge, I often wonder why we have rules at all, other than try to keep the place a hip, civil, warm, and inviting place where any sort of person can feel welcome...
None of this is terribly new, I remember this same sense of territory and pecking order existing back in the days when I used to use IRC as well. Screw pecking order, I'm a good enough and smart enough person...

I'm actually surprised how well this thread was received. I thought for sure a flame war would break out. Glad to see I'm not alone. If we stand as one, we can win!
Anyway, another point to the discussion is the thread re-direct.
The one where you post a question and someone tells you that there is already another forum discussing it. I'm pretty sure 99% of threads started probably have a thread already discussing it somewhere on the board.
Sometimes you just don't have time to make sure your topic isn't already being discussed somewhere else. Or on page 2. I guess if you post a thread right above another thread that you can argue that just makes too many threads, but at the same time, who cares?
Important point, the person who posts a link to a thread that will help answer your question is different that the person just pointing out that you aren't the first to ask the question. That is a big difference. One is helpful, the other might be helpful, but is more like "yeah idiot, didn't you see this already. you aren't the first one to think of this you know. stupid"
How come when a new product is announced, people spend more time figuring out which thread is the correct one because the moderators keep locking up threads than actually just posting and enjoying the product. People are excited.
The last few times products where annouced, there was barely any threads about it, because I think they kept getting shut down that no one could find where to discuss the topics. Or people where being so harsh that no one dared post a thread that declared, "I like the new intel iMacs". This happens all too often.
I don't know about you, but I post usually when an idea or thought hits me. And I want to get that thought out right away before I forget. I admit that I rarely use the search features or scroll the threads. But I do find that many of my posts are new subjects anyway. Some of them aren't, but again, I won't be the last person to ask about "memory" or "which is the best hard drive?"
Another thing that makes me laugh is the people that yell at you for posting in the wrong forum.
I try my best, but sometimes you have a question that fits into 3 forums or none of them. So I take my best guess or place topics I'm not sure where they go into the lounge.
And a fair amount of time, I get someone telling me to post in this or that forum.
Personally, I read all the forums. Some more than others, but people make it sound like I posted my topic in the totally wrong place. I understand why there are separate forums for PowerBooks and iMacs, but remember when there was no "iPod" forum. Where were those posts supposed to go? Hard drive I think. But man was that a problem for people like me posting topics about iPod under the iBook forum because I didn't know where to put them.
And just so I make it clear. This is the best forum I've ever been too. It's my favorite one. People here are 99% helpful. Even the jerks, aren't that bad.
Apple people are so awesome that even are "bad" guys aren't that bad.
I'm a big fan of LOST, and the forums I go to lost-tv.com, is like a war zone. Don't dare having a theory over there. I just mostly read them, because newbies are destroyed when posting.
I think part of the problem with most forums is that I'm 28 and I'm old. I'm arguing with 13 year olds who really are just causing trouble. Or think they know everything. We've all been that age. And before someunder under 21 attacks me, relax. I've known many smart 13 year olds and stuipid 55 year olds. But most teenagers aren't smart. It's just a fact. They grow out of it. The hormones mess up their minds. On these forums, I think our average age is much higher, thus better discussion.
I used to be active in www.zoetrope.com , but that place is like a graveyard now. All the idiots that joined it ruined it and drove away the members that actually gave a ****. There used to be 200 scripts to read any week, now it's down to 75. The posts are all the same, and on one answers. It's a dead forum. With people asking question with no answers.
So, at the very least, I can say that macnn forums are the best I've used. It's just that technology changes people interactions. And when people can hide behind handles like say "mallrat" they are much more likely to say what they really want to say. Everyone is tough when your anonoymus. Especially me.
I just think about Kevin Smith's movie "Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back" where Jay and Silent Bob beat up those posters by flying all over the country and asking 12 yeard old kids are you "Ass Monkey 13" and did you write that "Jay and Silent Bob are a bunch of stupid asses". Then when the kid says yes, they beat the **** out of him.
That movie sums it up best.

What I don't understand is this:
Why do people that have been around for many years, ask technical questions in the Lounge, on topics that have their own forums !!! , but complain about OT posts. I truly don't get it...

Except you, I assume. You're free to go insult us all whenever you like.
Anyway, you clearly didn't read my post, since the entire point was that by offering useful advice on how to get an answer to the question, they are both not necessarily being asshats and it's more useful to the person asking the question than if all the knowledgeable members had just skipped the thread.

Right on. Criticism is only good if it's constructive criticism. Unless the poster did it on purpose, the best way to answer is to address the question, and then, conclude by saying "by the way, next time, use this forum instead. It is also advised to read the rules if you want to avoid such situation in the future. Have a great day and welcome aboard!"
contrast that with a moronic "Wrong forum!!!11". Heck, this isn't even a complete sentence: no verb, no subject.. Well, I guess there are many people that wished they were mod so they had some kind of power, and try to demonstrate that they have the required "skills"... A kind of mall's security guard that think he's a cop and act that way...
Security Guard: Also sir, your car is parked more than a foot from the curb. I'm issuing you a warning.
Hank: You're not a cop.
Security Guard: That's why it's just a warning.

Mallrat's Dream World: Pete don't own a Power Mac, and thus doesn't visit the Power Mac forum. Pete does, however, use OS X, so he frequents the OS X forum. Bob posts an OS-related question in the Power Mac forum, but no one there knows the answer. Pete knows the answer, but because some bossy kid in the Lounge forbade telling people they aren't posting in the right place to find the answer, Bob will never find what he's looking for.
Great suggestion.
And I love how people in these threads telling people what to do then turn around and accuse the people they're talking to of being "wannabe mods." Sort of a three-fingers-pointing-back kind of deal.

Whatever Chuck. Do you really think that the people who come here are so dumb that they can't figure out that there are other forums? This isn't rocket science, really.
When people post in the wrong forum it's usually an innocent mistake, their judgment indicates that the forum is actually the most appropriate (this has applied to me and I've been ridiculed by the usual pedantic posters for using the wrong forum), or.. whatever.
Your world doesn't come crashing down around you because somebody posts in the wrong forum - really. It's just not a big deal. I repeat: it's just not a big deal.
Besides, if you are concerned with somebody learning about the right forum to post in, maybe Bob not finding what he is looking for will be that lesson? Moreover, like Mallrat pointed out, there is politely suggesting that somebody try the right forum, and then there is ridiculing for using the wrong forum. I don't think this difference is terribly subtle.
And I love how people in these threads telling people what to do then turn around and accuse the people they're talking to of being "wannabe mods." Sort of a three-fingers-pointing-back kind of deal.
Why not just let the mods do what they think is best, and regular members like yourself just chill out? As far as I'm concerned, good moderation should reflect the needs and desires of the people being moderated. It is pedantic people that help justify asinine rules.
Just chill out.

As I assumed it was in the case I presented — which is a real situation I've seen many times. People will post OS or app questions in the PowerBook forum when there are actually much better places for such questions. But apparently correcting their innocent mistake is unacceptable.

So, let me get this straight: Mallrat starts a thread on this subject with a long, passionate rant. I make a couple of short responses indicating that I think he is being silly. From this you deduce that I need to chill out?
Put down the Kool-Aid and look at the real world for a minute, man. I'm not the one who's gotten worked up here.

I remember once when I got my new iBook. At the time I was super excited, I finally had a computer that could run OS X! I posted in the lounge and was told that I'd posted in the wrong forum, and that I should have instead posted in the iBook forum.
How many people read the iBook forum? I wasn't asking for help, I was saying how happy I was that I had a new iBook! That was retarded, and I nearly just flat out left the forum after that.
Oh as well, WD was the best... I miss that guy.

Salty: You're a perfect example of what we're talking about - the idiots who want to prove how "smart" and "funny" and "RIGHT" they are by hopping up and down and shouting, "Uh, wrong forum, LOSER! Hey, IDIOT! You're posting in the wrong place! Uh, everyone LOOK - he's posting in the wrong place!"
And etc.

Like I said, there are ways to point things out without getting people's backs up. I really have a hard time thinking that the people who do get people's backs up aren't aware of what they are doing.

Get off your soap-box and chill out, I was directing this to everybody for whom this is applicable.

Uhh, excuse me? How often exactly do I say that someone has posted in the wrong forum? Try using that search feature and see how often you can find posts by me telling someone that they've posted in the wrong forum.

Reread what she said, she wasn't slamming you at all - quite the contrary actually.

Hi Mallrat
A fine letter, well said, Although at the moment I am one of those that has been trawling these forums, as I'm still relatively new to the forum thing, so at the moment going a bit over the top with my enthuiasm, a chance to off load all those things I've wanted to say, but now have the chance. so please forgive me. I might even use your letter as have been the victim of a recent piece of abuse from another forum.

Phil,
I don't know what that reason abuse was, but if you want to take it easy at first, just hang out at the different hardware and software forums. I did that for years. Then, after a while, I started attending the Lounge. The Lounge is different than the rest, so don't judge the whole MacNN forums just by the looks of what's going on here and the Political/War Lounge.

That was pretty easy to misinterpret. I thought she was slamming Salty too.

OK now when I read it that way I'm glad I didn't tell her off .
OK wait... so now... which is it? Is she accusing me of being like say Cap O or someone... or is she saying that she gets annoyed when people pull that crap on me?
