For some reason, I got the following two emails from apple this morning:

Dear .Mac Member,

Please be aware that you've exceeded 90% of your .Mac data transfer quota for the current period. At the current rate you may exceed your quota, especially if you have received this email towards the start of a two-week monitoring period (the 1st or the 16th of the month).

If this happens, access to your site(s) will be turned off. For details on your current data transfer usage, click here.

As specified in the .Mac Terms and Conditions*, member data transfer limits are determined by the amount of your storage. These limits help protect against network spikes that can negatively affect the experience of all members of the .Mac community.

If you wish to increase your data transfer quota by purchasing more storage space, click here.**

If you do exceed your data transfer quota and have your site(s) turned off, service will be reinstated at the beginning of the next monitoring period (the 1st or 16th of the month, whichever comes first). For more information, see Help.

The answers to frequently asked questions, tips to help make your website more efficient, and help from the .Mac support specialists can be found at the .Mac Support website.

Thank you for your cooperation.

Dear .Mac Member,

Please be aware that you have reached 100% of your .Mac data transfer quota for this two-week period and we have turned off external access to your site(s). Attempts to visit there will produce a page explaining that your site has gone over data transfer quota and the material requested cannot be displayed.

You can still publish to your site(s), but you will not be able to view any changes on the Internet until your site is reactivated. Reactivation will happen on the 1st or 16th of the month, whichever comes first. To review your data transfer usage, click here. To increase your data transfer quota by purchasing additional storage space, click here.* For more information see Help.

I can't imagine how that much data was being pulled off my website in that short a period of time. I've had my idisk up for quite sometime. Has this happened to anyone else? Do you think apple logs where data is being downloaded to?

I just have some old programs that I used to work on (and still do from time to time)... as well as some miscellaneous crap that I link to on the forums. There's no files on there by themselves that represent a large amount of data. According to the email, their tracking periods start on the 1st, so that means in less than a day and a half I went over quota, when I've never gone over quota before.

What is their address? I'm either blind (highly likely) or their email address isn't listed on the help page.

Did you piss anybody off recently?

Back in the day this was a popular way to get even with somebody.

Just point a bunch of computers at somebody's website and continuously request data from it.

I've been a victim a few times.

Also, perhaps something on your website was 'slashdotted'. While it's supposed to be a great achievement in the geek world - both times my projects were slashdotted it cost me a bunch of money when I got the hosting bill.

That's when you submit your bill to Slashdot and kindy request that they foot the bill.
