Interesting. Highly doubtful that that would ever come to pass after Dell's comment from late '90s about liquidating Apple's assets. Although, Jobs may accept his proposal if Dell agrees to crawl over shards of glass and serves as Jobs' butler for a few months.

I'm on the fence here... on one hand, I don't want to see OS X on a POS Dell, but how are we going to get that $299 (After Mail In Rebates!) loving PC user to switch?
Many would say "oh, just get a Mac mini if you want a cheap Mac" and my response would be "It's $299 for a complete system!"
While shopping form my mother, I really wanted to get her a Mac, but just couldn't bring her to spend $599 for a mini + keyboard + mouse + monitor. Sure I could have purchased an older Mac, but I wanted some kind of warranty. The only solution was a POS Dell or build it myself (ummm, no). The Dell works... and she really only uses it a few hours a week. But wouldn't it have been nice if it was a Mac?
If Apple could make a $399 complete Mac (after mail in rebate), I would give them away as gifts.

Ok so what Apple will make $10 off this sale? Is this really a customer they want? If he even calls tech support once Apple has lost money.

I want Apple to buy Dell, fire Michael, and use the logistics in place to sell Macs the way Dell sells their crap.
I hate everything about Dell.... hardware design, CEO, ambition & aspirations.... but what i do like, is their logistics. And i think Apple could benefit a lot from that model.

Apple makes 80% of its money from hardware sales.

That's cause Dell is the lowest end PC on the market. Steve wanted a nice contrast. Other option might have been an eMachine.

If Dell is able to do it, so should Apple.
At this point in the game, I would like to see Apple go after EVERYONE. The ONLY reason EVERY member of my family doesn't go Mac is because cost of hardware. I realize hardware is where Apple makes most of their money, but things are starting to shift a bit. With the iTMS, 18+ month update cycles, iLife and iWork update cycles, I think Apple could sustain such a computer on software sales.
Also, I believe it is the only way to grow the user base quickly.
I'm also a bit selfish and want to see my platform of choice flourish.

Ummm, actually, Dell is known to offer everything from VERY inexpensive computers to high end systems and servers.
Don't underestimate Dell.

Why do we need to get that kind of person to switch?
Do you think Rotel cares that people buy $199 home theatre packages from RCA?
Does Mercedes care that people buy Chevy Cavaliers (or Cobalts, whatever they call 'em now)?
Apple is already successful selling premium quality computers. I don't need some cheapskate buying the cheapest computer on the market to justify my decision to use a Mac.

Exactly. I was beginning to think I was the only person on the planet that was ok with Apple having a small market share. Sure it would be nice if they broadened their customer base and made some more money, but why is everyone so hard up on the (pure fantasy) idea of Apple becoming the dominant computing platform in the world? What is to be gained by everyone switching to Mac other than you being able to say "I was here first! Nah nah nah"?
No thanks.

It's the need to be able to say "I was right". Happens in all walks of life; religion, politics, cars, computers, etc

Like Steve is fond of pointing out - BMW doesn't have much in the way of marketshare, but no one is telling them they need to come out with a $10,000 car.

I really think right now they're pretty good. I'd like to see Apple cover a few more areas, a Mac book mini to fill in more of where the iBook was, and try and cut prices a bit more on the mini if at all doable. But really Apple is doing pretty good.
I actually think I like being in the niche. If it got bigger than 10% I think I'd have to start looking at linux on an acer... seriously we had tons of people switch at school this year and it got to be a bit too trendy.

So you use OS X because it's "cool"?
I DON'T buy from Apple for the "cool" factor. I use it because it is the right tool for the job. If Apple could sell a $299 system, I would be happy.
The BMW comparison is ridiculous (always has been, always will be).

I could easily see it happen. If/when Apple choose to release OS X on a disk for "normal" x86 hardware.
Why not? If the iPod sales shot up like that when released to the PC the only thing I can think will happen is the same with OS X!

Good points. Really, by what measuring stick is Apple not already successful? I'm sorry, my AAPL stock has quadrupled; what the hell do I care if Apple grows into a crap-box-making machine, as long as their style isn't compromised, the OS still shines, and the hardware is solid, then I say go for it. Whoops, can't do that at bargain-basement prices. So F the low-end-backwards-hat-wearing-closeted slickdeals key-hunting dweebs. I'm elitist, dammit.

That does not work.
BMW sells style, exceptional power and (in the meantime again) reliability. They charge according to what they do. It is impossible to create and maintain a first class product for a crap price.
Macs are a great working tool because of their stability. And this is a direct consequence of apple controlling the hardware and of the time they take to perfect their products.
If dell would sell os x, apple would have to deliver new drivers every week for this weeks cheapest components. This will trash OS X stability and reliability and make apple a slave of their distributor.
Plus apple hardware sales will drop like a lead duck. Did you read all the posts from people who cannot wait to install os x on a sexy sony (at half the price apple charges)?
So the premium platform that you enjoy for your work is premium because it has a price and because it is not open to everyone.

I'm talking about Apple selling $299 [or inexpensive] computers. I would simply like to see Apple being competitive in the lower price points.
Also, regarding the "car to computer" comparison... it would be more like BMW that creates great cars... but the engine uses special gas [applications]... and the car isn't capable of driving on some roads.
