So I'm not sure what he is. A daredevil? An entertainer? A publicity hound?

David Copperfield is an illusionist. David Blaine just does freaky stunts.

I wouldn't count on that. I think there's been plenty of trickery in his stunts. There's no way he really going to hold his breath for 9 minutes or genuinely escape from chains without some "illusion."

Exactly. What would the odds be that he is going to take exactly 9 minutes to escape and set a new recored.

All sorts or press is leaking out about what bad shape he is in and that he might not make it yadda yadda.

I have respect for him, he pushes limits. He gets a lot of ridicule and anger thrown at him, and still goes on. That's even more impressive, he's got balls. (Though after 7 days in the water they... uh, nevermind.)

He might also kill himself, but if doesn't hurt anyone else doing it, fine. Illusion or not, atleast he does things instead of just bullshitting.

On May 1, 2006, Blaine was submerged in an 8-foot diameter, water-filled sphere in front of the Lincoln Center in New York for a planned 7 days and 7 nights, using tubes for air and nutrition. He will conclude this event by attempting to hold his breath underwater to break the world record of 8 minutes, 58 seconds. In a change to the original stunt plans, whilst attempting to break this record, Blaine will now also try to free himself from handcuffs and chains put on him upon coming out after the week in the sphere.
Mark Harris of the British Free Diving Association spoke out, saying that Blaine will have an unfair advantage. "[Since] he will be breathing compressed air under water... he will have a much higher concentration of oxygen molecules... in competitive freediving, we are positively banned from breathing pure oxygen before the event."
Even if Blaine succeeds in holding his breath for more than eight minutes and fifty-eight seconds, it is unlikely that the feat will be officially recognised as a new world record. This is due to the fact that judges from the International Association for the Development of Apnea (AIDA) would have to be present to verify that Blaine breathed no pure oxygen for at least two hours prior to beginning his attempt at the world record. The world record for holding one's breath after having breathed pure oxygen is actually closer to fifteen minutes.

I happen to enjoy most of the videos I have seen of blaine. I think he really does his stunts, the rest of his stuff (card tricks) is the illusion part. He is one of the few entertainers that pushes the human body and mind instead of just making fun of minorities and swearing a lot.

He's an entertainer. Some are entertained, some aren't. If this is what he wants to do, more power to him.

However, the phrase "David Blaine: Drowned Alive" gets me. Is this as opposed to being drowned dead?

Same here. His water trick is impressive from an endurance standpoint but it isn't really magic or terribly entertaining.
