A couple of my friends who work at Apple are telling me their call center has a high amount of calls in for repairs to CPU failures in the MacBook Pros. This hasn't made it into any news that I've seen, but he's been telling me that their engineers have been having considerable headaches over the Core Duos failing during production. He didn't mention anything about the iMacs, though, just the MacBooks.
Has anyone else heard about this?

My guess is it's probably related to the serious overapplication of thermal grease on the MacBook Pro cooling system. Xlr8yourmac.com has had some good reports on that, and links to pics of some systems, and it's just absurd.

Dear lord what problem does the MacBook Pro NOT have?
So far:
1) Battery recall
2) Screen flicker
3) Buzz
4) Excessive heat
5) Random shutdowns
This is the buggiest product apple has come out with in a long time. Guess I was right about them rushing it to market.

Well all of the other problems don't seem to be intels fault.
Heck my G5 makes the same bussing noise the MacBook Pro's do it just didn't get as much press.

Sounds about like my PowerBook. Except for the screen flicker. It didn't do that.

Except that I've never seen as many serious problems with any other Intel-based machine -- ever. Not even a Dell notebook.

Jeez Apple, you're just supposed to make Macs with Intel processors, not to have them suck like Wintels too!! /rimshot
Seriously though folks.. Apple QA is very flaky and seems prone to quite a bit of 'monday models'. These really have to be taken back and replaced. When Macs today work they work fine, but if they don't they're so integrated and soldered that a machine replacement is just about the only viable option.
Kinda like how iPods a rarely repared, just replaced. This applies to the iMacs and portables, not to the towers.

The battery recall and random shutdowns were both solved with a new battery. The buzz and excessive heat seem to be similar to what people are describing, but they've never really bothered me at all.

Doesn't a sore backside indicate that you've jumped into the relationship a little too quickly?
Oh. And don't even bother to ask me about my old Sony Vaio, which used to like going on vacation to the Sony service centre for a couple of weeks per year

To be fair I think Mac Users are more picky and vocal about things like this.
I see PC users happily use a laptop that as a loud fan blasting the whole time and enough heat to fry an egg.

I think it's just that PC users are used to it. Mac users are more finicky, as Dark Helmet pointed out. People were complaining about the powerbrick size, I think that's an indication about how picky Mac users are.

How about those T60's? I hear that they're whisper-quiet and can comfortably be used on a bare lap.
Generalizations for the lose!

My T43 from work is a fairly nice machine. My biggest beef is that XP still does not wake from sleep in a timely fashion (sometimes takes over a minute...)
Glad to hear the machine is working well for you now Chuck...

And so do I. My friend has a HP laptop that gets stupidly hot and the fan constantly runs, it sounds like a hoover. The power brick is huge and the laptop gets so hot the power adaptor cable melted into the charger socket on the laptop. That one's been back to HP so many times for problems, Mac users are picky but we also expect a £2000 laptop not to have the same faults as a £395 HP laptop.

Generalizations still suck.
The laptop I bought for my girlfriend is smaller, lighter, and faster than my iBook, and the fan barely comes on. Build quality is better. The keyboard is better. The only thing about it is that wireless reception is not quite as good as my iBook.
That throws a wrench into your generalization gears, doesn't it?

Nice red herring. The discussion was about the hardware side, and the generalization that all PC laptops are crap that overheat and have blaring fans.
But anyway, it's an Averatec 3700 series. Oh, did I mention it's got a brighter and crisper screen, a 60 GB hard drive, and was bought for just under $800 CAD brand-new? I'm not sure if the ability to run OS X, along with a cheaper screen, cheaper keyboard, smaller hard drive, and heavier/larger size is worth the $400 CAD premium for the iBook G4.
It just goes to show that Apple is not God's own company.

Averatec and good build quality do not belong in the same sentence! Just wait a while, my sister had one of their laptops, the screen randomly got these huge green lines in it, I think the optical drive stopped working, all manner of problems, and that thing was UGLAY...
Dude if you'd sooner have an Averatec to a Mac... you have serious issues.

That's because the iBook is what... 10 months old?
Yes when you buy a PC it will always have more RAM and hard drive space but the quality isn't the same.
Also if it doesn't run OSX all deals are off.

Sounds like your sister needs some lessons in proper laptop care/use.
I'm no noob when it comes to laptops, and I can definitely say that this one looks and feels to be built more solidly than my iBook. Based on specs and price alone, I am jealous of it, but it's true that I far prefer OS X.
Still, generalizations *suck*, and I wish that some of you would quit with them.

If you need lessons just not to make a computer go down in flames, that's a failing grade for the computer in question. I mean, unless she was using the laptop in the pool.

I think I am the only one that has had no problems with my 500MHz snow iBook.
it was even one of the possible logic board problem models and it is still kicking.

Wow. The only problem I know mine had was a broken reed switch/screen cable hence I got it cheap. It's still going, no signs of logic board problems but the tightness of the case may be the thing keeping it alive.
