How can I shorten the length of an mp3? I only need it to be 30 secs long. Can this be done in garage band? or does anyone know of any freeware programs I can use?

MP3 Trimmer. It's shareware, but the demo is functional. Check versiontracker.

!@#$% you can't save without buying the program which is 10.95 and all i want is a certain song as a ringtone on my phone. Can't buy it from Cingular and not worth 10.95 and suggestions?

use audacity. it can be downloaded for free. i think you'll need to install a LAME plug-in to work with .mp3 though.

Yes, you can use GarageBand. If you have QuickTime Pro, you can use that too.

audion is a great mp4 player that has an AWESOME file editor... it actually shows you the waves(?) that the music makes so you can splice right before a sound... or right after... MUCH easier to get right the first time...

Audion might need to be paid for before you can do that though...

Audion is free now. Panic stopped selling it quite a while ago.

D'oh! I was under the impression that MP3trimmer was free, it's not like they state that fact clearly on their website... I had installed it today, but I think it's time to delete it already

You can read a similar thread, posted recently: http://forums.macnn.com/103/ipod-iphone-and-ipad/294483/how-do-you-break-song-up/.

iTunes.

Just use iTunes to set start and end points of the mp3 in question (in the "Information" dialog, Apple-i, under Options, will also take decimal fractions of seconds), go to "advanced" menu, and have iTunes "re-convert" it to mp3 or whatever you want.

It will add a new song to the library that is only the snippet you want.

You can then go back and change the start and end points to 0:00 and whatever the actual end of the song is.
