Whoa, they're actually serious? That thing is hideous. (Talking about the skin, not what's on screen, to keep this out of the PL.)

What a joke!, I will keep the W. Bush Edition, it is still a better choice.
On the flip side: the same autograph Bush has used since 2nd grade.

Because that's what Apple called it when they released it.

Did they? I don't think they did. I could be wrong, but I thought they just always called it "iPod." Perhaps it was something like, "iPod. Now with video," or something like that.

Perhaps my memory is incorrect. I have been existing on very little sleep lately. Kids are sick.
[Just searched the Apple web site, couldn't find any reference to a "iPod Video". There's nothing like actually researching something is there?]
To me it makes sense to call it an iPod Video. If I say I just bought an iPod, I would expect someone to ask what iPod I bought. If I say I just bought an "iPod Video", it leaves no question as to what one I have.
The people at the link that the OP provided, in my opinion, are avoiding a lot of emails asking "What iPod is it?". That's just My Opinion mind you.

Because most people don't keep track of the different generations of iPod. "I have a 4th generation iPod - Great, the one with video? - No, you fool, that's the 5th generation!"
According to Wikipedia, Apple refers to it as a Fifth Generation iPod or a iPod with video. On their website and online store, however, they only call it an iPod. iPod Video makes sense to me: you don't have to ask for clarification.
