Here is the news: If you jump out of plane, there's a chance you might die. That's just the way it is. If you want to lower your chances of dying, don't jump out of a plane - take up quilt making instead.

This was my first thought. Still, the kind of negligence that results in someone's harness not even being secure seems the least likely way for an accident to happen. Wacky. I suppose the article's not clear on whether the whole story is out—it could've been that the instructor did everything right, but the harness had some kind of manufacturing defect.

You should definitely go for it. The chances of dying from skydiving are incredibly slim. About 30 people die from sky diving accidents in the US, which works out to 1 out of 100,000 jumps.

I went skydiving for my birthday and it was one of the best experiences I've had and highly recommend it to anyone. What happened in this situation had nothing to do with the parachute, it's just that it seems she was not properly buckled to the instructor, so when you go make sure you're buckled in, but don't worry, even if you don't the instructor always will.

Yeah, thank god for the helmet. Or maybe the helmet was thinking "thank god for the person that broke my fall." This is too bad, but a calculated risk.

There was a guy who fell from 10 000 feet a few years ago. The chute did not open but he survived. He fell in some very soft stuff. I don't remember what.
You live more in 5 minutes on a bike like this, going flat-out, than some people in their lifetime

Some woman, about 22 / 23 survived a fall earlier this year, i remember someone posting about it here on the NN, there was a video of it and everything.

I've done it and loved it, would probably do it again to. The best bit is leaning out the back of the plane and that first step into oblivion.

The odds of surviving a fall from any real altitude without a working parachute are far slimmer than having a parachute fail on you. Still, I'm not of a mind to leave a perfectly good airplane in midair. My father-in-law did so several times as part of his "all expenses paid tour of North Africa and Europe," otherwise known as WWII. He said the natives were friendly but the welcome was never very nice.

You noticed too, huh? At least the show lives on in more ways than syndication.
