I opened up my dryer the other day and found my shuffle right by the door, probably yelling to get out, but without head phones attached, I didn't hear it. Obviously it had gone through the wash cycle too.

So now I want a new one. So delima number one: buy another shuffle? The original was a 512. Upgrade to a 1 gig shuffle? Then I think if I'm going to a 1 gig unit, might as well have a screen, so I could buy a 1 gig Nano for $140.

Delima number two. How do I inscribe the new one? If you've ever clicked on my sig, you'll see the story about my husband's iPod; how I found it on eBay after we'd been burgled. I like the phrase "saving the world one iPod at a time," but do I want that on my nano forever? (and obviously, I didn't save my shuffle!) Option A. OK, then there is Option B: "Don't even think about selling this on eBay." Option C: something inspirational; Option D: name and phone number; Option E: please post a cool idea for me!

Ok, so vote in the poll using these options, so I can decide what to do.

Option C: I'm not going to kill this one.

Although, I understand about selling a customized iPod. My current 20GB iPod Photo has this written on the back.

I tried the shuffle and found the lack of the screen to be a big inhibitor for me. That being the case I'll cast my vote for the nano.

I have all the iPods Apple has made, and I find myself using the nano (black, of course) more than any of them.

I engraved it with my name and stuff.

I have a 40GB photo, a 2GB nano and a 512MB shuffle. The shuffle is the one I take to Vegas. It's the one I use while doing yard work. It's the one I use while exercising.

1. Supercheap price means it's practically disposable.
2. Bulletproof form factor means it's unlikely you're going to break it.
3. The random nature of shuffle means I set it and forget it... No fumbling around "selecting" songs.
4. Incredible battery life means I don't recharge during 10 hours of round trip driving and a week of vacation.

My photo has been in a drawer for more than a year. I realize I never look at pictures on an iPod, nor do I care to. And it's big... And heavy. The nano is nice, but I worry about breaking the screen when doing anything other than sitting in Starbucks with it.

#1 shuffle fan!

First of all, are you sure the shuffle is dead? I've read posts about them going through the wash and just leaving them several days to thoroughly dry out, they've been fine (after a recharge and maybe a reset/firmware reinstall).

Regarding a new one, it all depends on your usage - I just have a shuffle & love it for when I'm working in the yard as it's a tough little bugger that cleans up easily. If it died, I'd get another. Any iPod model above the shuffle would end up quite distressed from being around mowing, mulching, hedge trimming, etc.

That said, I do want to pick up a Nano (probably next revision if the capacity is upped) for use in the car and other activities where a screen would be beneficial - and I will get it engraved with something meaningful to me.

I'd go with a Nano, and get something meaningful inscribed.

I have on the back of my 30 gig

"In the pit of despair
I rest in my father's hand"

I think if I got a new one I'd again just take a line from one of my poems and use it again.

Hopefully you capitalized Father, but oh well.

Get a new shuffle. They are cheap enough not to count as a significant investment. Get a 1 GB shuffle.

As for the inscription, this time I'd change it to: "Help, I can't swim!"

No, I'm not sure. I thought it was alive. I plugged it in and the lights came on, I recharged the battery, swapped out some songs, but when I plugged in the headphones, nada. no lights, no sound, nothing.

I'll try again in a couple of days, charge it up and see what happens.

Well, it was worth checking out. If you would have bought a new one immediately the old one would have mysteriously healed. Time to let go & enjoy your new upgrade, whatever that may be

My bro's Nano went throught wash. He set it out to dry for about 5 days it still works. The only problem is that the battery only holds about 1/2 the charge and the battery indicator icon on the iPod doesn't know that.

So far I've found my shuffle amazingly hard to kill. Its been exposed to snow, water, dropped a handful of times, yet here it is.

Update - Day 5
I plug it in and I get lights; iTunes recognizes it; no music, no battery indicator light.
