I received the applecare package. Do I need to install anything on the disc or register online or anything for it to be valid? Or is the warranty automatically in effect?

You'll need to register it so they have your serial number, etc. You can do that online.
Yeah I never knew you had to register it (I bought it from Apple, bought my iMac from Apple - can't they figure that out?) so now I'm going through a big hassle since it's past my one year warranty.
