I'm on dialup with my Dell. My Macbook doesn't have a modem so there's a few things I was trying to download to my PC and then put them on a disc to load into the MB. Most files seem to be getting screwed up in the process. I tried to get VLC player several times and it didn't work. I finally went to a public wireless area and just used the Macbook and it worked fine.

Soon I'll get broadband so I'm not buying a modem for my MB. But in the meantime...
Does the PC just not recognize mac files? I'm not opening or unzipping them. I'm simply downloading and burning them. What's wrong with this?

It should all work just fine, but since Windows is involved...

Really, I can't think of a single reason why what you're attempting isn't working. I've done it myself many times.

Archive things before you transfer them.

Buy an archery set and use it to kill the Dell. That should sort you.

If you zip the DMG on the dell and then transfer it across, it will work on the mac.

If you don't have broadband yet, you can use windows internet connection sharing and connect an ethernet cable between the dell and the mac and use the internet on the mac via the dell.
