Hey everyone,
I'm looking for a new cellphone now and I thought some of you might help me here. Personal experience, additional arguments or new cellphone suggestions are highly welcome!
I currently own a Sony Ericsson K700i which is now nearly two years old and tends to hang itself up here and there, sometimes does some weird things and distinctly looks like welcoming a successor.
What I want:
- Bluetooth
- MMS and E-Mail and GPRS
- A big memory for messages (the K700i can only save 100 messages - which I hate)
- An intelligent and ergonomic interface
- 100g to 150g
- not one that can be opened (what's the English word here?)
- small
- a good stand by time and a good talking time
- the ability to change the message and calling ringtone
So, I don't want much and I've already seen the K750i which seems to be close to what I want, but I'd be happy to consider alternative suggestions.
Thanks in advance!
Steve

SteveJobs, can't you just "borrow" the iPhone prototype? Just go down to the R&D lab and pull a "Batman Begins" kind of stunt. The way I see it, all of that stuff is yours anyway.

Hey,
Thanks for all those replies!
What's so about about Motorola? This cellphone looks pretty neat, I think; so, where's the problem? Many people have recommended sticking with Sony Ericsson and forgetting about the rest of the bunch. What do you say to this?
Greetings,
Ingmar

Sony Ericsson K800i, if you have the money. I sold mine because it cost too much. I currently have a W600i. Should I get the W810?

Should I reply here, or in Peripherals? The Lounge seems more appropriate for this topic anyway.
Since you're a Mac user and used to Sony Ericsson phones, I think you'd be disappointed with anything else, especially Motorola (if only for their interface).

The word you're looking for is flip. There are flip, candybar (your K700 is one of these), swivel, and slider phones. I just got a W180i myself and love it. It's quad-band with EDGE, has a Memory Stick Pro Duo slot (4GB cards available), good battery life, small and light (99g), and of course has the best interface available! It also has a *good* 2.0 megapixel camera. The K750/W800 are cheaper, though, if that's a factor, and they're very similar, just not quite as good (and no 850MHz). The K790 comes out soon and will be better than the W810.

^^ I have the VX8100, I like it but Verizon disables many of the features of the phone (i.e. makes you only able to download ringtones from 'Get It Now', of sure, you can download from a 3rd party, but can't actually USE IT.. cripes!)
My take on Verizon:
Service (areas with cell service):

Well, the K700i is also based around the camera and other multimedia features, and that's the one he already has. Furthermore, the K750 he's looking at also is based around the camera and multimedia features.
One of his complaints also was that the K700i is very limited in terms of memory. Other phones like the K750i he mentioned and the K790a I suggested do not have this limitation, but the K790a seems like it will be a much nicer phone than the K750i. It's up to him whether or not he wants to spend the extra money on the K790a (and wait the few weeks until it's out), but hey, he asked for options.
The other point is that it's quite possible the K790 may be quad band. That may or may not be true, but if it all matters to the poster, then it may be worth waiting a few weeks to see. (The SE website says tri-band, but all the latest prototypes are quad-band, and SE has been known with other phones to switch the specs from tri to quad on its site at the last minute.) In the very least the K790a will have the 850 band, and if he's in the US, then that's a distinct advantage over both the K700i and the K750i.
The M600 you suggested may be an option too, but personally I really dislike the look of that phone.
P.S. I had the K700i. It had serious joystick issues. (The joystick issues are a well-known problem with the K700i in general.) I hope the K790a isn't the same.

I thought the same until I saw it in person this weekend. It is literally the best phone I have ever seen. Small and light, perfect for adult hands and stunning features. The pictures don't do it justice.
If it supported 850MHz band I would be all over it.

Yeah, now that Rogers bought out Fido, 850 is more important to me. It seems to me that Fido's urban coverage of 1900 was often better than Rogers' coverage of 1900 is now.
With my phones that do not support 850, I got better reception in certain places when I was on a dedicated Fido network, than I do with the supposedly new and improved Rogers' network.

That is the sole reason I am in the market for a new phone.
I'm contemplating the w810i, w800i, and the w850i. I'm holding out until I find a price for the w850i.

I brought my K700i to Oâ‚‚ due to the joystick issue today. They are doing a repair under guarantee. The funny thing was that they have "joystick issue" in a popup menu of their guarantee form on their computer. So this can't be a rare issue.

Check out my old K700i (the whole joystick broke off and I opened it to see what happened). It got replaced by my W600i. What's the difference between the W800 and the W700 because I'm planning to get a new phone.

As far as I know, the W700 is pale gold instead of orange and white, and it has less memory built in. Had a quick look between them a while ago and couldn't find any other difference.

Yep, and I'm hoping the K790 series will be quad. It's listed as tri, but nonetheless all the latest test models have been quad.
There is no quad version of the K750 series AFAIK.

^^^ The W810i seems fine - quad band and 2 MP AF camera. However, I'm still leaning towards the Sony Ericsson K790 series because it's got a 3 MP AF camera and a much better screen (and hopefully is quad band as well).
BTW, does Apple not support any Samsung phones? The Samsung SGH-D900 looks like an interesting option.
Quad band, 3 MP (not AF), and only 13 mm thick.
The Samsung isn't the prettiest phone in the world though. I've also disliked their UI on their previous phones, but apparently it's much improved on their 320x240 phones.

You guys are pro's at giving him suggestions on stuff you want and not what he ask for.
So far the thread is full of high megapixel camera phones and MP3 players neither of which he ask for.

Yeah, I want a new phone too, but why don't you let him speak for himself? And he already has a K700i, and is looking to upgrade to the K750, which is phone with a high megapixel camera and MP3 player.
P.S. Does anyone know anything about Samsung phones on OS X?

^ FWIW, the W810 (and K790) have EDGE, which is sort of a 3G-lite.
I agree though that using GPRS for internet access is extremely painful. I used it on a business trip once. I haven't used EDGE, but it should be noticeably better.
But alas, I use neither now, because both GPRS service and EDGE service cost too frakkin' much here.

GPRS was nifty to have around 2002, but it's practically useless as a means for browsing today's Internet. EDGE (2.5G) is far more usable, but it's still sluggish compared to broadband. One nice thing about EDGE is that it's available all over the country; for example, I've been able to use EDGE along Amtrak's Northeast corridor from DC to Boston.
UMTS/EV-DO (3G) has been available for a few years now, and HSDPA (3.5G) is just becoming available. There's no reason for business travelers to settle for an antediluvian EDGE phone anymore, let alone a GPRS phone.

Nokia.
Best radios.
Easiest to use (some would say boring) interface.
Many are iSync compatible with your Mac.
And they run the gamut from the disposable free-with-your-contract POS to the trick $700 import and everything in between.
I loves me some Nokia.

For me the fact that Nokia's have some of the worst battery life on the market kill it for me.
Now I know you are going to say it lasts you a couple days and it is fine etc etc.
I just like going away for a week and not having to bring a charger.

That's fair SWG. Different strokes.
I'm carrying a BlackBerry right now and long for that "couple days" Nokia gave me.
I'm jonesing for a new phone purchase.

Why don't you have a look at the Sony Ericsson m600. It has blackberry support and a much better battery, plus it is smaller.
