I am looking to buy only one new game for my ds, was debating on these two because of online play.

The online play is the saving grace, since the one player play is somewhat broken. Tetris Ds has a thing called infinite spin, which turns the game into something that Tetris is not supposed to be.
In the one player game, when you hit level 200, the pieces don't drop, they literally appear at the bottom of the screen. HOWEVER. As long as you continually hit the A button to spin the piece, the block will spin forever. You can go and get a cup of coffee as long as you keep wailing on A. It makes it really lame.
That said, when playing online, you can only spin the pieces for a second or two before they lock, and you will never get up to the speeds where the game starts to get dumb.
I love the online play, but was pretty disappointed in a lot of aspects of the single player. It's still one of my favorite DS games, simply because online play is so much fun.
Mario Kart DS is also broken online. There is this technique called "snaking" that some people use to get speed boosts after speed boost by mashing the pad back and forth. If you refuse to snake, you will lose to a snaker every time.

I like Tetris DS but I couldn't stand the over-did nintendo themes. I prefer russia theme for tetris, it's a perfect match, nintendo characters are not. Also there's almost lack of original graphics in tetris, they copy-n-pasted all old popular 8bit games' graphics into tetris.
Infinite spin is very, very lame. Only nice addition to tetris series is save a piece for later use feature
I haven't tried Mario Kart DS yet so I can't say which is better but I do find Tetris DS single player very disappointing.

Skip it. It's mildly amusing for about 10 minutes and then you will never want to touch it again.
The best DS games are as follows...
Advance Wars DS
New Super Mario Bros
Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow
Tetris DS
Mario Kart DS
Wario Ware Touched
Also good (but not as good) are Meteos, Brain Age, Metroid Pinball and Sonic.
Avoid Metroid Prime Hunters. It sucks.
Also, there are a bunch of games that others seem to love, that I have not played, so don't consider this list to be all exclusive.

I don't know, I rather enjoy Metroid. The online play is excellent and the controls are smooth.
Phoenix Wright is also supposedly very good, if you can get your hands on it. Personally I have a hankering for something not a puzzle. Or tetris. Or racing.

I was wondering if sonic was any good. Saw it at the used game store last night... only about $27 USD. I really have the urge to import Advance Wars DS, as well as Castlevania.
Plus there the large quantity of GBA games that I wouldn't mind playing.
