Why in the world does it take them a year and a day to:
take out their purse
look for their change purse
put the change in
reorganize their purse
gather what they bought
God almighty, just throw the sh*t in your purse and GO!

I guess it is better than people writing checks at the grocery store. I can kind of understand that you don't have a credit card, but please at least write out half of the check before you come to the checkout.

I don't carry a purse. I carry a wallet and my cell phone in my hand (which I'm surprised I haven't lost yet).
But, I totally agree. I HATE it when someone has been waiting in line - and they have all kinds of time to fill out the entire check except for the amount - and they wait until their groceries or bill is totaled and THEN they start to write the check.
And, yes, it's usually women.
Men pay with a card or cash every single time. Women are so annoying in so many ways most of the time.

Another thing that is so annoying is the coupon bitch: The woman who pulls out coupon after coupon after coupon...and then argues about outdated coupons that won't scan properly...calls the manager over...all to save $1.85 on an $80 grocery bill.

Nope, even my girlfriend sometimes takes way longer at a register than I think is necessary.
Part of it is becuase her wallet doesn't unfold so that bills can slip in, rather they need to all be folded up and mashed in with everything else.

Lets think about this for a minute. Is your time really that important that you can't take an extra minute or two at the checkout line? What ever happend to being friendly and curteous? Take that extra time to say "hi" to someone and get to know the people in your community. Slow your life down a little and relax. If you look at the event as being "fun", then you won't get frusted by the small things.

Yes, my time is that important when I've got a 25 pound child in my arms, another one tugging at my other hand, and I'm trying to get out of a grocery store without vomiting because I have terrible morning sickness.

I agree with Cody.
10 people in line each wasting 2 minutes is a lot of freaking time when it happens in every store on every visit.

It's just an example of people who are completely unorganized. Like the ones who take the ENTIRE family to the counter at a fast food restaurant so they can START considering what they want. Bad.
Cody, I have no problem with a mom holding a baby, or any woman with other things to deal with, having to dig through her purse at the register. It's the ones who have nothing else to do (and usually plenty of time before their turn to check out comes up) that wait until the very last minute to dig out their wallet that rile me up. I actually try to help people with more things to manage than hands while in line. But the morons who think they're the only person in the universe are definitely on my list for "leave to their own problems."

Cody, the problem is not that you have a child with you. I often bring my kids with me (all three of them) - but the real problem is that society (and the stores) should be more accomodating for families. Some stores around here have parking for parents with kids. Wow, does that help not having to carry the child seat across a huge parking lot.
There's no cure except time for morning sickness. Of course, it's pretty simple to avoid getting in the first place . . .

Yes, I am in bad morning sickness shape, to put it mildly, with some complications that will remain private, but yes you are correct...I wish I didn't have to tote my kids with me...it's the pits sometimes, especially in grocery stores. I am going on week 8 of severe morning sickness.

In the UK, they print the cheque for you. Give cashier blank cheque, they run it through the register which prints out all the details, all you do is sign it. Take seconds.
Having said that, I can't remember the last time I paid for groceries with a cheque. Debit all the way.

Working on number 3? Kudos to you. I'm still too selfish to work on number one (ie I have none).

Thankfully nobody up here uses cheques. That said I do not get people who do Visa in stores like that. I mean... you have to sign and all this stuff just makes forever. Debit is awesome.

Places still allow personal cheques for retail payments abroad? I don't think anywhere accepts personal cheques for such payments over here.

I don't see the appeal of a debit card. Is it really that hard to pay off a credit card bill at the end of the month that you'd rather risk your entire bank balance by using your debit card everywhere, thereby greatly increasing the chance of it getting hacked?

I think the better question is, "Is that person's need to have exact change more important than my two minutes?"
...and the answer is no. My two minutes are more important. And Cody's are definately more important, what with the situation she described.

Oh I am quite friendly and courteous at checkout lines. I hurry my ass up, out of respect for other peoples' time. If that means I have a bunch of dimes instead of a couple of quarters, so be it.
=======
And lets consider this (this specifically applies to the coupon people that were brought up). If time==money, that means.... these people are wasting everyone elses money so that they can get a little more money.... hmm. Thats pretty greedy.

I'm not saying this doesn't happen, but I've never seen it - so it mustn't be widespread. Maybe in some bigger shops.
Can't remember the last time I've seen someone use a cheque actually... mostly cash or 'Chip and Pin'.

Ever think about why many people use exact change and take the time to dig it out. Because they have too. They either need to stretch the dollar on every purchase and/or on a fixed income. It may amaze you but there are a lot of people struggling to make ends meet each month and instead of pissing and moaning about how they are wasting your so important time have a little more patience.
Man we have some selfish people here. So what if it takes a lady an extra 20 seconds to dig out some change, or use some coupons and by the way I never waited a full 2 minutes for someone to get exact change so that argument holds no water. I can see maybe, maybe one elderly person taking 40 to 60 seconds but there is no way in Gods green earth that 10 people will waste 2 minutes each.

Listen, we're not talking about a few seconds. I'm talking about MINUTES. Like 5+ minutes in some instances. My head is pounding, I'm sweating, my stomach feels like it's on fire, and my gall bladder (which has a problem right now and they cannot remove it) feels like a steel rod is being jammed into it (deep pain under the right side of my chest)...oh, and I want to hurl all over the cashier I'm so sick. Meanwhile, some lady is arguing about a .30 cereal coupon that won't scan because it is outdated and asking for the manager...
What's wrong with THAT picture?

Well the OP's rant was a general issue of people getting exact change and your one experience of having to wait 5 minutes is really the exception. People are whining in this thread about waiting just a little while. If I were you and I'd give the lady the 30 cents and be done with it.

WHAT? Whether they pay the 23 cents or get 77 cents back, it's still the same amount.

Uhh... whether or not they use exact change, they are still paying the same amount!! And fixed income or no, my time IS worth more than their need to walk away with only bills and quarters.
For the coupon thing, this works. But they should have the courtesy to make sure their coupons are not expired, and have the maturity not to b!tch about it with the cashier and make a whole big scene if the thing is clearly expired.

... as though you are the only person on earth. "Oh my, it doesn't apply to me, so it doesn't hold water." I suppose you don't think there's a good argument to cure cancer, so long as you don't have it?

It doesn't need to be 20 minutes. 1 mintue is enough.
Case and point: the coupon thing I can see, and the point about people on fixed income is valid--for this. But NOT for wanting exact change. And there is a polite way of doing this, and a way to minimize your wastage of other peoples' time. If they show me and others courtesy by making sure everything with their coupons checks out BEFORE they get to the cashier, I will be patient.
Being old or on fixed income is not a reason for me to allow people to be inconsiderate.

I've noticed around here that there are "aisle whores" (AKA, people that park their cart in the center of the isle... and will stand NEXT to it... so you can't get around them...
For crying out loud... if you are going to stop, pull your cart over to one side or the other!

Costco only accepts AmEx or checks (that's cheques to you that speak non-US english.)
But they do print the check for you, so all you have to do is sign. Very handy.
Otherwise, I use cash or debit card for 99% of what I do. As does my wife.

"Aisle whores?"
That's a new one on me.
But how about this: Ever have someone run their cart right into the back of your heel? I did about 6 months ago and it actually damaged the achilles tendon on the back of my heel. Went to see a podiatrist about it.

Couldn't have happened. Otherwise it would be in the archives. Unless you didn't post about it. LOL
Just kidding Cody.
I hate people who act like nobody else is around them. Show manners. Don't block aisles. Don't cut people off.
And don't ram your cart into someone's heel!

I usually carry around $40 cash with me, and that's for the odd thing that I can't pay for with anything else. If I'm going to need more than $40 cash I'll usually know ahead of time and get some extras cash.
I prefer to use my credit card as much as I can because it saves me from fumbling with change, I get Air Miles, no debit charges from over use ($1/transaction, ugh) and it's a free loan for a month.
I can't stand cash. I don't even want to start on my dislike for cheques. Stupid things.

I was thinking about things that annoy me at grocery stores and there are all kinds of things that annoy me.
Like the cashier who takes your carefully bagged fruit, plops it on the scale in front of her, then tosses it down to be bagged up.
By the time I get the fruit home it's all bruised.
Another annoying thing is seeing a dirty belt at the register...meaning the belt that moves the groceries up to the cashier. Like, once I was getting ready to put my things up on the belt and the lady ahead of me was buying chickens and they'd left a bloody mess all over the belt...around went the belt under and over and it smeared chicken blood everywhere...the cashier saw it and didn't care - she was impatient and had that, "Well, put your groceries up here so I can ring them up!" kind of attitude.
I pointed out to her that she needed to clean the belt for me and the people behind me and she made a huge ordeal about it.

I am not being inconsiderate, because I am not the one doing anything. What, having (and specifically, expressing) an opinion about jerks like that, that's inconsiderate?
No, wasting other peoples time, no matter how short, just so you can have only bills and quarters is inconsiderate.
But I see that you refuse to admit to the possibility that you are wrong, and it is clear you either lack either the will or the ability to address any of my arguments. As such, I shall waste no more time presenting them, unless I should need to clarify something I've said or rectify a misunderstanding.
