Working a crap job to make some decent cash..... in addition to my normal job, but I was a ways from home. The wife and I share one car, and one cell phone.... she was already on her way home from work, so I couldn't reach her to pick me up.

Sooo... walked over to the nearest onramp, stuck my thumb out, and watched people stare at me. Talk to a few people, but nobody offers me a ride. Then I see it.... a sweet little grey machine... and I think to myself, nah, this guy won't pick me up, so I'll just point to the car and give the thumbs up. To my surprise.... the car pulls over, window rolls down, and the guy says "I'm headed to Marquette..."

SWEET.

It was sweet. Great sounding engine, stupid fast, but incredibly AWFUL to get in an out of. The guy's name was Perry, a lawyer from NY who told me about his experiences hitchiking in England.... how hitchhiking saves time and gas, how it used to happen all the time but then went out of style after those hippies got killed, and how the media overblows anything bad into an epidemic of mass proportions in an effort to scare everybody.

I'm Ca$h. And I support hitchhiking. *

I used to hitchhike all the time. Home from school rather than wait for the bus was a favorite. On weekends, the last bus from the centre of town to the god-awful suburb I spent my teenage years in left at 10:30 pm, the first bus after that at 5:20 am. So I often hitched a lift home, in the middle of the night. Never had any problems.

When I was 15 I hitchhiked all through Southern Germany, Switzerland and Austria. My parents thought I was on a hiking trip and every time I called them I needed to make up a reason why I was traveling as fast as I did.

I recommend it. You meet interesting people.

You were picked up by a NY lawyer? I thought you were in the chicago area.

When I was in Israel for a year everyone hitchhiked everywhere, I would still stop and pick someone up here though.

I hitchiked across country and up/down the west coast about 15 years ago or so now. It was fun and exciting, but nowadays I stick to public transportation or my own vehicles.

Cash I am not so sure it is safe to do that. I definitely recommend woman NEVER do it.

Just because you had one good experience you shouldn't endorse it.
