PDA's have been on a decline for years, now they are being replaced with cellphones more than ever.
The treo is a good device but look at the rest of Palms line-up.
The lifedrive hasn't seen an update since it came out (what 2 years ago) and the other handhelds are a bit of a snooze.
Palm OS6 never shipped, the next version will supposedly be linux, buyouts, spinoffs left right and centre, it is a mess.
If it wasn't for the treo Palm might be dead already.
Question is do we need PDAs? Sure there are very specific markets that use them but is it big enough to try to cell at the local best buy to average consumers?
EDIT:
the last question should read: "Palm should only make PDA's for very specific markets, NOT the average consumer"

I had heard several months back that Palm was moving toward an entirely Windows-based lineup, dumping PalmOS.

Last I heard Linux was going to be involved.
If that happens it would suck though. Another Microsoft product muscling it way into a monopoly. MS has seemed to TRY harder than palm though.
The windows based treo's don't get as good reviews either.

How about a new poll:
Should SWG learn how to use an apostrophe?

PalmOS (or whatever they're calling themselves now a days) is moving to linux. While Palm has voiced there commitement to palmos, introudcing a treo that is using Ms windows was a a shocker. More so it seems to be very popular.
The PDA market is definitely in upheavil right now. Dell is rumored not to be developing any more PDAs Sony got out of the PDA market, I think Toshiba did also. For what ever reason not too many people use them. I myself am looking at the moto Q and replace my dell axim 50.

I dated a girl who had an apostrophe in her name. It's all I think about!

I put off buying a PDA after my beloved (But large) newtons.
Finally I got a Palm zire and it was a neat device, I just found myself using it for NOTHING!
All my contacts and dates were in my phone which is 90% of what I need.
The only thing I used the palm for was downloading news stories and reading them on the subway. The software to do that though was so awkward I couldn't be bothered each morning though.
I sold it a year later.

Well that explains a lot. Did she send you an email with "your dumped" and since then that line without an apostrophe in it has echoed in your mind?

As Frank Zappas dog would tell you, the crux of the biscuit is the apostrophe.
Of course, if it was one little ' that might get you dumped too.

As I mentioned in the other thread, something like "90's" can be considered acceptable, although "90s" is preferred. However, I agree, "PDAs" is what is usually considered correct, not "PDA's".

I think the rule is only to use an apostrophe to eliminate confusion. If you are talking about the first letter of the alphabet, you couldn't just say:
as
You would have to say
a's.

Poor Palm.

That's just it, the rules are not universally accepted. "90's" in North America was considered OK by many, especially in the past.
As for "a's", that's acceptable too, but many others recommend using "As" (instead of as), even though I think "As" is basically as confusing as "as".

The situation is complex. At least for now, they're providing Windows-based and Palm-based versions of their new products. That may change in the future. But if it does, I hope it's not to move to Windows-only.

Am I the only person who carries around two devices, because I want a PDA to do the things that PDA's do best, and a phone to do what phones do best? I don't want a single device that's the least of both worlds.

What does your palm do that my phone doesn't do well? I carry around a 50¢ pen and a piece of paper.

"90's" is wrong. Period. The apostrophe never indicates plurality; not with dates, not with letters, and not with acronyms. Never.

No. You would write "as," or "As." If you want to avoid confusion you can say, "the letter 'a'," or contain the letter in quotation marks.

By the way, Palm released the Palm version of the Treo 700. I'm sure the 700 was supposed to be Windows only, but they came out with the Palm version as well.

this thread is being rerailed.
I've seen doctors, contractors, and students using PDAs, but only to view little checklists or check for appointments. In all those situations they could have just used a notepad.
I'm sure somebody out there has a legitimate need for a PDA but they're gonna be replaced by phones for the average person.

Wrong. "a's" can be considered acceptable usage in North America, because "as" is ambiguous. However, like I said, some recommend simply capitalizing it, to "As". "90's" often used to be considered acceptable usage, but these days it usually isn't.
For someone claiming to know everything about apostrophes, you should be aware that rules about them sometimes vary.
http://www.askoxford.com/asktheexper...spelling/pizza
An apostrophe is used in plurals in the following very special cases:
1. in the plurals of single letters:
There are only three s's in `Christmases'.
Mind your p's and q's.
(Even here, the capital letter would not need the apostrophe.)
2. in the plurals of abbreviations:
We have several pg's [paying guests].
We have received four cheques and two IOU's.
(But IOUs is common and accepted, and the usual plural of CD is CDs).
Most symbols for units such as lb (pounds) and cm (centimetres) do not strictly have plural forms.
3. in the plurals of numerals:
This house was built in the 1930's.
(But 1930s is preferable).
4. As an alternative spelling, for clarity, of the plurals of a very few short words:
We went to several society do's last year.
While out with his third wife he met both of his ex's.
I've had yes's for coffee from four people.
But in each case, dos, exes, yesses would be acceptable. The usual plural of no is noes.

I beg to differ.
I can't speak for contractors and students (other than medical students), but as a doctor I use my PDA for a LOT more than just looking at my calendar or using checklists.
There are TONS of programs available for physicians, for example.
This is what I use:
Prescribing reference (ePocrates)
Several medical reference texts
STAT Coder (billing tool to make sure I don't overbill or underbill... both of which can lead to charges of fraud by Medicare)
Various calculators that have useful formulae in them (plug in the patient's data, get result)
Appointment Calendar
Address Book
Notepad (to scribble notes to myself)
Documents to Go (Word, PowerPoint and Excel in a mobile form factor)
Non-medical stuff I use:
Solitaire
Bejeweled 2
TealAuto (keep track of car expenses, MPG, etc)
RegCodes (keeps all my LEGIT hareware and commercial serialz in one place)
SlovoEd Dictionary program with Greek/English and English/Greek dictionaries (I may speak Greek fluently but I grew up in the US so naturally I'm better in English)
Appointment Calendar
Address Book
Notepad
Yes I could get a Treo and do all that stuff too plus have a cell phone, but: a Treo is WAY too bulky for a cell phone (which should be small and compact-- I have a clamshell phone for a reason), and I'd rather not risk the phone ringing when I'm looking something up when I'm with a patient.
Also. IT IS NOT OK TO TALK ON YOUR CELL PHONE WHEN IN THE DOCTORS OFFICE! For some reason, patients think it's ok to answer their cell phone and talk for 10 minutes when I'm in the room with them. "Hello? I'm at the doctor's office."

I bought a Palm about a year ago, but now I only use it as an ebook reader.
Last summer was a nightmare. I was carrying around a cellphone, an iPod, the Palm, my camera, and of course keys and wallet. (I had to get one of those stupid "fanny packs" just to carry everything. Grrrr)
When the ROKR came out, I bought it. Though it's not a perfect replacement (USB 1.1 grrr), it's good enough for most things I used the Palm and iPod for.
So now I read with the Palm, and work out with the iPod.
So, should Palm dump handhelds? I don't know, but I would never recommend one. If someone really needed an organizer, I'd recommend a BlackBerry.

I always wanted to get a palm but I've never needed one. I've seen a few people who live and die by their palms... I keep pretty organized with just my iPod though, helps that my PowerBook is super portable.

Palms are still needed in niche markets (medical and inventory comes to mind) but yeah, smartphones are pretty much edging them out in the consumer market. I think once 3G becomes widely adopted or WiFi becomes a common feature in smartphones, and text input methods improve or thumbboards become more widespread, Palm will become entirely irrelevant save the Treo (which, having owned several, can attest to how amazingly unreliable they are.)
Palm completely shot themselves in the foot with the bizzare PalmSource spin-off, then re-aquisition, then never actually using Cobalt in anything. Palm OS is embarassingly outdated now, OS 5 came out with the T|T in 2002 and even then it wasn't exactly a revolution over OS 4.
