Patsy Ramsey, JonBenet's mother, dies

ATLANTA, Georgia (CNN) -- Patsy Ramsey, mother of slain 6-year-old JonBenet, died Saturday of ovarian cancer, her lawyer told CNN. She was 49.

She died about 3:30 a.m. at her father's house with her husband by her side, lawyer Lin Wood said. She was diagnosed with cancer in 1993 but was cancer-free for nine years until a relapse three years ago.

The unsolved killing of JonBenet in December 1996 put Patsy and John Ramsey, the girl's parents, in the spotlight. (Watch as lawyer describes how suspicions affected the Ramseys -- 5:41)

A grand jury investigation into the death of the child beauty pageant winner ended without charges in 1999.

JonBenet's beaten and strangled body was found in the basement of the family home in Boulder, Colorado, the day after Christmas.

I'm glad this thread was here to remind me who Patsy Ramsey was. I thought something had happened where the Redskins QB had gotten a sex change and died in the process...

Too bad for her that she never got to see someone arrested for the crime of killing her daughter. Also too bad for the many, many other mothers of 6 year old girls who have died since 1996 that their cases recieve so little attention.

My theory has always been that their son, JonBenet's brother, was the killer. He was prepubescent, curious about sex, did something to his sister he was ashamed of and killed her to cover it up. The parents don't want to lose another child, so they helped cover it all up.

Notice I said theory... I obviously have no proof.

I always believed this poor woman had hell piled on top of hell on top of hell on her. Cancer, murdered child, international accusation. For someone involuntarily forced into the spotlight and whose tragedy was turned into a soap opera for our entertainment purposes I think she dealt with it with strength and grace. Hopefully her and her child have a little heaven now. RIP.
