So beta 2 has been out for a while.

I installed it three days ago, and personally, I found Vista an abysmal windows release. I actually had a high expectations for vista, but there are so many aspects with the beta that have reminded me, quite strongly I should add - why I switched to OSX in the first place.

To name a few grievances I have with Vista

• The operating system in general seems to 'get in your way' by popping up annoying system notifications at every turn. For instance If I open device manager, the screen dims, the OS locks up and a popup flashes and kinda says "Hey?! are you sure you wanna do that?"

• The security 'features' also get right in your face. You want to open a certain folder - screen dims, OS locks up and your warned. You want to pretty much do anything that involves the web - your warned about something in a similar fashion. Very annoying. The OS seems to be in a constant state of red alert.

•The Glass UI at first glance looks fantastic, until you start to use it. the Gaussian blur effect does little more than provide a distraction. Also, where has the File - Edit - menu gone? and why do windows look different when maximized? The new Ui seems clutterd, and coupled with the constant system notifications makes the vista experience one to remember, in a negative way.

• IE7 still still does not render some css correctly!?

• Navigating around the systems feels Im using an asthmatic operating system. Constantly wheezing notifications and reminders and issuing pop-ups in the sys-tray causing my workflow to crawl and stutter. The amount of clicks to get from A-B have also increased, meaning Vista makes the user jump through hoops. And Vista is slow. Compared to XP, its a molasses. Granted it is in beta at the moment.

• It seems Microsoft have tried to make vista user friendly to the average Joe, but by doing so I feel they have complicated the experience. Wizards seem to be overused. Trying to find a solution to a problem, means I have to almost wrestle through a bevy of Wizards.

• Windows photo or whatever is sad. No where near the caliber of iPhoto. Same goes for all the other iLife.. I mean Windows applications.

• Flip 3d can't to anything better then alt+tab - if anything alt+tab is far more efficient. Why include it?

some of the things I liked about vista.

• Cool desktop images
• Some nice new fonts

In the end, its not what i had hoped for. Its certainly nothing like what Microsoft had declared they were going to deliver - but thats hardly a surprise

Anyone else had a sting with Vista Beta?
