Seriously, I'm watching an interview on television about a man who just said, "I noticed in high school that I was paying more attention to guys than I was to girls and after a while I started to realize that I must be gay."

Okay, I do not think that I'm gay, but I'm attracted to attractive people. For instance, I admire beautiful women, women who are smart, women who are just attractive in various ways. If I walk into a room and see a beautiful woman sitting there I will go over and sit down next to her rather than someone else like a retired older woman, for example, who isn't necessarily attractive (though I have seen some beautiful older women - Lauren Hutton was at a benefit recently and she is just astoundingly beautiful). It's not even a conscious decision - I'm attracted to attractive women, I admit.

On the other hand, I can say the same thing about attractive men and being naturally drawn to them.

But, I never considered actually having a sexual relationship with a woman...it does nothing for me...despite admiring how beautiful or sexy a woman is or can be. I am sexually attracted to the opposite sex, men. (Well, man, since I'm married. )

Here is another thing: In high school I distinctly remember paying more attention to the girls rather than the boys. I paid attention to how female peers wore clothes, hair, accessories. I wanted to make sure that my sense of style corresponded. It was important to keep up in that way. And of course hanging out with girls led to friendship with other girls, also important at that time. I didn't cultivate friendships with boys the same way.

Therefore, based on that presumption, I too might have said, "I pay more attention to women than to men...I must be gay." Just like the man in the interview that I was watching. Why couldn't he have been peer correlating the way a lot of teens do, comparing himself in a social setting with male peers so that he meets subconscious social group criteria, an unconscious desire to belong? Why did he decide that his correlations must mean that he's gay?

So, how do you know when you're gay? And, don't you think that some people are confused and they aren't really gay...they were just confused?

Here's the last thing...how can a teenager decide he or she is gay if he or she has never been with the opposite sex in his or her life?

There's that third option you know.

Aren't women more predisposed to this type of behaviour anyway?

What are you talking about? Bisexuality? No, I don't think so. My husband jokes about that - I think a lot of men have a fantasy of women liking women because it's their fantasy...but it doesn't make it true.

For the record, though, no I have no desire to be with a woman and once when my husband made a joke about it for the umpteenth time I cornered him and asked him if he would really like me to be with a woman and he thought about it and said no. There was one time down in Miami Beach with a friend of mine named Ingrid who was partying with us and Ingrid is definitely attracted to women. She was dancing with me, paying attention to me, and my husband got very jealous - the same way as she were a man. He reminded me of that incident and said that he wouldn't like it (if I were with a woman), no.

Well, it was what he said. "He paid more attention to boys in high school."

So he decided that he's gay.

He never had any experiences with girls or women in school, so he decided that he's gay.

I'm trying to understand the leap between paying more attention to boys and deciding to have sexual relationships with them, that's all.

Could it be that "paying more attention to boys in high school" is a polite, TV-friendly way of saying "got a raging chubby when looking at the other guys in the showers"?

Doofy, I don't know. Could it be?

I honestly don't know. He didn't say that. He said he was 13 and he was paying attention to other boys. It seems to me that most, not all but most, 13 year olds are still paying more attention to boys than to girls anyway. I take my 13-year old to school and every day that I pull up there are groups of boys and groups of girls all standing around talking to each other in groups of the same sex. They're still at that age when they're not really intermingling.

Severed Hand, no, I'm not confused about my sexuality,

I'm just questioning how this kid arrived at the idea that he must be gay because I think he was confused and didn't have good parenting that helped him to understand his feelings. I'm not saying that more involvement with his parents would have mattered, but I'm saying that if he was confused and didn't have someone to talk things out with then he might make erroneous assumptions, you know?

Why does somebody starting a thread about gays always mean they want to turn to the dark side?

That might be, but I seem to remember getting a real kick out of looking up girls dresses when I was in 3rd grade, and I've loved cleavage since I was 5.

So, yeah I might have been hanging out with da boys, but I was still being distracted by da girls. I think the other guys implication is he was being distracted by da boys.

Cuz you are neck deep in any gay thread. Just like superchicken was...

And who said me wanting any of you on the "dark side". I'll pass thanks.
It is just funny watching how interested some of you are.

When was the last time a gay guy started a thread about "how do you know if you like snatch"?

It was the last good movie Ritchie ever made. Then he married "Maudonna" and it's all over for him. Speaking of which, I hear that their train has come and gone and it's all over for them, also.

I don't think I can name another movie whose soundtrack is both as good and as essential to the film as that one.

Fight Club was critically panned.

But, I guess you could say that it was okay, yes, I'll give you that.

Swept Away (should have been Swept Away Under The Carpet) was made after he married Maudonna.

Fight Club wasn't Ritchie.

And yeah, I guess Swept Away would be a piece of crap, but then again, you could blame the genre just easily.

Yeah, I see what aspect you responded too. Yes, probably the best ambient soundtrack I know of. The power drill in Stealing Fat is enthralling.

Yup. So the basic conclusion is he doesn't have a real body after the marriage of work to judge.

He did do that one BMW film with Madonna that was alright. "Star", I believe.

As others have pointed out, this is almost certainly meant in the sense of being more attracted to guys than girls. Paying them attention in a sexual fashion. You know. Like if a hot guy walks past, you'd notice and check out his ass, and your heart would race a little bit, whereas if a hot girl walked past you probably wouldn't think twice about it. Sure, you might notice and might be able to appreciate her being attractive, but you wouldn't be so bothered and certainly wouldn't go weak at the knees. Hence, paying guys more attention than girls.

Get it now? You see, I even avoided the raging boner in an attempt to keep it to something you could relate to.

I took there to be an implicit "in the shower" after "pay attention to guys."

Regarding Fight Club and critics not liking it?

The critics panned the movie. They especially hated the ending. If you peruse some of the early reviews by the big name critics, they all have the same mantra…MTV filmmaking, pointless, juvenile, empty, all flash and no bang, etc. It’s funny how the film is now regarded in many circles as one of the best films of the 90s - a bit of revisionist history.

Fight Club

The relative disappointment of The Game, however, did little to dim the excitement that accompanied Fincher's next project, Fight Club, a screen adaptation of Chuck Palahniuk's novel of the same name about two men who open up a club devoted exclusively to bare knuckles fighting for males. Featuring a sterling cast that included Edward Norton, Helena Bonham Carter, and Se7en collaborator Brad Pitt, the 1999 film was easily one of the most publicized of the year but was an early disappointment at the box-office and received mixed reviews. Fueled in equal measure by stylistic audacity and the spirit of disenfranchised machismo, Fight Club the film was panned by most critics (called "macho porn" by Roger Ebert) and alienated audiences leading to its box office failure in the United States.

I guess some people liked it. I didn't care for it. In fact, I fell asleep watching it.

I think it was one of those movies that gained a cult following after it left the box office. Kind of like Office Space.

Its definitely a cult title, as you say. For those that like the book (usually), or the message, it is most definitely held in high regard.

Part of the appeal is that there are so few movies like it out there.
