I bought a pack of 100 ultraviolet LEDs w/ resistors off of eBay ($12 shipped) and I've used 7 so far in my Beige G3 tower. Any ideas on what to do with the rest? I like having fun projects, maybe something new and challenging?
Here's what I've done so far: (sorry for the blurry pic, it's hard to hold the camera still for a good pic of the light)

How'd you make your G3 black? Just spray paint it? (btw, that's the first "mod" I did on my G3, I replaced the green LED with a blue one. No soldering required.)

Yep, I cleaned up the case, then put several coats of black paint and several coats of clear. (BTW...that's no Beige G3 motherboard inside ) XBench score: 62.

What kind of monitor do you have? I have a 21" Philips that I replaced the green LED on the power button with a blue one. I'd just go through your general electronics and start replacing LEDs.

I have a dell 19" CRT, among others. I should look into that.
And the throwies were cool!
edit: on second thought the LED changes from orange to green depending on the computer's state, eg plugged in, connected, on, etc, so I probably wouldn't want to replace that.

Ultraviolet, eh? If they were, then neither you nor your camera would be able to see the light they emit. You have blue LEDs.
Great price, though!

Yeah, I was kind of worried that I wouldn't be able to see the light. They're definitely a deep purple (they look blue in the pics, but they're very purple in person) and they make white on my clothes react just like my black light bulbs. You can kind of see in the pic with the pattern on the desk how the camera lens kind of freaks out at the light. But yeah, true UV light is outside the visible spectrum.

You should wait for some special even in your town and arm small children with the throwies.

I'd like some to redo the lights on the dashboard of my car.
Currently the gauges are orange. I'd like blue much better.
contact me if you're willing to part with some?

Well don't use UV LEDs for that, you'll ruin your eyes!

The pictures are deceiving, the lights are actually purple, and if you look at them within the 20 degree light span, the eyes start to hurt and get spots.
eBay link
There's a link to an auction for 20 blue LEDs for $5 shipped from Japan from the same seller I got mine from. They come with the correct resistors for a 12V application, which is really handy.

i've completely forgotten the web address at the moment but you should look around for Luxeon Star and Apollo LEDS. They're 4 or 5 bucks each some of them, but they're REALLY f'in bright, like in the 1 to 5 watt range. The Apollos are ceramic and have a built-in reflector, the Luxeons are an emitter on a small mounting board and you can get a varriety of spot or wide-angle lenses for them. Really rich, intense & pure color, used a lot for outdoor architectural lighting.
I've been using them for edge-lit shelves and product displays and that sort of thing but they're great for blinding people too.
