My roommate has this little stereo that's connected to her laptop by way of usb link. I always thought it would be cool to do the same for my iMac but she told me that the stereo or more importantly the software was Windows only and not compatible with the Mac and so my dreams were dashed.

Until I decided to hook it up when she wasn't around and I decided to see if by just connecting it with the USB cable and picking the output on system perf would it work—even tho she said it wouldn't—and it did!! no software(Music Match) no drivers like she needs to download to get it working. It's just the simple plug and play with the Mac....yup, good old Macintosh doing things that none thinks it can do...

I just got my iMac this week, and it's one stunning beautiful machine. No flaws at all. No dead pixels, no noise, it's virtually silent. I'm loving it. And with the recent influx of intel compatable software, there's no stopping me from loving this machine!

So what did your roommate say when you showed her that it worked with no drivers?

Nice. I love when people tell me that something won't work with a Mac. They tend to be wrong. Though my laser printer required some work.

I had the same with my Dad. He'd just bought an HP printer to go with his HP laptop and was struggling through the driver installation process. I needed to print something off, so wondered in, plugged my iBook into the new printer, printed, and was out of the room before he could say 'Whu?!'
Needless to say he bought an iMac G5 soon after that!

I didn't now mini stereos (or any for that matter) had a USB input for a direct digital connection without using a Optical connection. Something else to add to my wishlist for my replacement receiver (AWIA junker mini home theatre CD, Tape-deck dead, just used for computer audio).
