We have a hardware filter that does checks and stuff so people can't forge headers and receipts. Well, apparently some company's figured out a way around it. In any event, it doesn't catch the fake emails and we're now getting emails that look like people have emailed themselves a message. They'll be blank, but have an attachment like "ADULTMEDIA.ZIP" or "MEETINGNOTES.ZIP"

Obviously spam/trojans/viruses. Bad thing is, I know someone's gonna open one or two and we're gonna have some problems.

Is this at a company? If so, why not email everyone with a warning to not open these attachments?

There is indeed a special spot in Hell reserved for spammers. And I swear if I ever meet one in person, they won't leave our encounter without shedding some blood.

I agree with you 100%. Spammers should be tortured before being executed.

Do you have an off-site backup email server which isn't protected by the hardware filter? I know I started getting a load of spam when the spammers started using my external backup. My main server was rejecting them just fine, but the backup was accepting them and forwarding them.

Get real. Think about what you're saying, torture for a spammer? Out of hand.

Anal rape by a gay biker gang would suffice quite nicely without resorting to torture.

As bad as email spammers are, fax spammers are 10X worse.

I now get spam on my mobile phone! Wtf is that all about? They come as 'push messages', but you can choose whether or not to accept them. I'm sure lots of people accept them just to see what they are, and get charged.

I don't know about that. It seems to me government regulation of fax spam has cut that problem down substantially from what it once was. On average I'd imagine people get 10,000X more spam than fax spam

As for the original poster's problem, it sounds like the hardware filter is being circumvented because the messages are coming from a valid internal computer that was compromised. Track down the source and I bet it will be found in-house.

Yeah, we don't keep paper in our fax machine at all at work anymore. Every once in a while we hear it beeping and stuff and we just smile.

What's a fax machine?

Someone called at work the other day asking for our fax number. I was like 'Uh... I think we might have one of those... in the attic somewhere, gathering dust...'

True. Email spam volume >>> fax spam volume. However on a 1:1 basis, I hate fax spam much more, because it eats up my consumables.

We never got round to getting our fax machine connected properly in my office. I can't say I've ever missed it. I've got a G4 hooked up to the fax line, just in case anybody wants to ever send us a fax.

I was under the impression that an 'unsubscribe' link just verifies to the sender that that's a real email address.

I was talking about the unsubscribe 1-800 number that you can call and have your fax number deleted from the distribution list. It's by law a mandetory "feature".

Email unsubscribe links are even worse, you are right. They just verify that you email is still alive. That's different with fax numbers, which give themselves away at the moment they accept the fax. So there is no point in re-verifying.

We only use our fax machine for sending out orders, so it's unplugged if we're not using it.

NEVER email everyone about a potential virus/trojan threat. Contact your IT department and THEY can contact everyone. The second largest traffic problem after the "I Love You" virus was people warning everyone they knew about it. And that clogged the Internet-the whole thing-for a couple of days after the virus had been contained. Further, emails with "watch out for this virus" are often a medium for viruses themselves. They often have "run this script to test your system" attachments that install a virus. So tell your IT folks about what you've seen and let/make them do their jobs.

I had to laugh at an attempted phishing scheme I found in my inbox yesterday. It was pretty well done and did look like an authentic message from eBay, but while eBay's fraud protection service is called 'Safe Harbor,' this e-mail was from 'Pearl Harbour.'

I've actually only ever sent one fax, and that was years ago. My family had to fax our Christmas list to some relatives, so I hooked up our 6116 and GeoPort Telecom Adaptor and fired that thing off.

*cough*.
It's the preferred method of ordering by my customers. So that's a couple of thousand exceptions to your statement.

I dunno. Can only speak for my bit of England. They're still in common use here. Maybe non-use is industry specific? (i.e. design companies are more likely to use email, since they have to transfer customer files back and forth)

i've never gotten an email, business card, letterhead, piece of literature or Web link from Europe or the UK (and I get a LOT) that didnt have a data line prominently listed....

Doubt it's any less prevalent there than it is stateside.

I didn't know fax spam existed. Surely that means the spammers need to pay for each spam..

There are a lot of uses for fax on both sides of the pond. In many cases, a faxed, signed document counts as an original, at least until the original gets there by postal mail. Faxes are more secure than email too-you have to actually tap a telephone line and intercept the connection AND hope you sync the signal properly to intercept a fax transmission. Further, considering the relatively low speed fax goes at, it's free of error more often than not-error in transmission that is, not necessarily free of scanner-induced or operator-induced error!

yep, all that.

i still know a lot of people that will fax a few pages of a letter/conversation overseas...only takes a minute or two to transmit compared to god knows how long to accomplish the same thing in back and forth talking.

obviously thats for people not emailable.
