I have been noticing it in the tech blogs for years. VIA makes a green chip and everyone oooohs and aaaahs about the better battery life. Transmeta makes a green chip it is immediately ridiculed and compared to a Pentium II.

Is Slashdot and Engadget full of loser PC technicians?

I found the Slashdot crowd to be pretty fair, actually. What story are you referring to?

I always thought it was the other way around, Trasmeta was praised but VIA was hated.

Transmeta's chip is not at all the same as VIA's. VIA makes a true x86 chip that pulls very little power and doesn't need a fan. Transmeta makes a chip that can behave like an x86, but isn't one. That's where people get fanatical.

Salty, the Transmeta chip was praised when it was announced. But developers (habit-bound as they are) never bought it because it wasn't what they were used to.
