Would you want to listen to Justin Timberlake sing a song which he describes as David Bowie and David Byrne doing a cover of James Brown?
Justin has vowed to push pop music to new limits. That's some high cotton. Do you think it will be any good? Or just lame hype?
Oh the album is called FutureSex/LoveSounds and the song in question is called SexyBack.
edit: Julius Timberlake has also graciously refused to be crowned king:
"I think that you guys definitely want a new king of pop, you definitely want one and I'm probably not the only one who you might be thinking of. I don't want it. I want to do what I do," he said.

When he sang to Janet Jackson that he was going to, "have her naked by the end of this song..." at the Super Bowl a couple years ago, and then backed away from admitting he knew what he was doing, I kinda crossed him off my list.
High cotton! I love that expression!

"Loose Ends" by Sergio Mendes (with JT, Pharoahe Monch and Will I Am) is a pretty good song.

Justin Timberlake. Meh. Have you all taken leave of your senses?

With all that leather, sinew, and polished chest-flesh, someone might think you were a bit of a poofter. Didn't someone else on here call you "the only gay Tory in Milton Keynes"? Methinks we should be expecting an "announcement" from you any day now that you are now out and proud.

I called him that
I was kidding of course
Anyways a lot of great rock stars are/were camp.
Who could forget about how in the old days, AXL Rose would prance around on stage wearing nothing but a girly hairdo and tiny biker shorts? He looked gay as hell but that's just part of a rock star's showmanship.
(Note- JT is very gay but he's certainly not a great entertainer)

To be honest, I hadn't noticed it. I was too busy trying to stare Joey down.

I think it's great that an ex-boy-band member knows who David Byrne is. On the other hand, while I love James Brown and like Byrne and Bowie a lot, I find the idea that something sounding like a 3-way betwixt 'em would be good pretty dubious.
Also to JT's credit, the one song of his that I know well (Cry Me A River) is, well, really good. But the Neptunes probably had as much to do with that as he.

I had a hard time admitting this (and I still do), but JT's last album was, ummm... pretty good.
but his producers probably had a great deal to do with that (as slugslugslug mentioned). I'll give his new album a listen just to see where he'll take it.

I'm thinking of something intended to be funky but hopelessly not, having been overproduced into something that sounds more art-rock than funky but is hopelessly not, with vocals from somebody who can't really sing - in a charming way that is hopelessly not, writing great lyrics that hopelessly aren't.
In short, a pathetic Logic pop production just like all the others, where people make up for lack of *anything* by getting lost in the "amazing possibilities" of computer production.
I could try to soften that by saying that I'll "withhold judgement until I've heard it", but I don't think anybody'd believe me.

I wouldn't be surprised if the whole album and its concept were based around the name FutureSex/LoveSounds.
I bet Justin Timberlake was sitting around by his pool thinking "hmm I need an album that will be totally revolutionary, so I'd better start with an edgy, futuristic name like FutureF*ck/Year2000 or something along those lines..."

Neptunes had nothing to do with "Cry Me A River". Timbaland however can take more credit than anyone for that song.

He'll probably try to go 'funk'. Too bad. Funk is underground right now.

Dang, that was Timbaland did "Cry Me A River"? Thanks for the correction. I just took somebody's (probably my girlfriend's) word for it that it was Neptunes-produced. Certainly wouldn't have been a stretch.
Anyway, yeah, the song is mostly good for the production. The lead vocals and lyrics, while not mediocre enough to ruin the song, are certainly nothing to write home about.

Yeah, most of the first cd was neps, but that song was tim. I like it too. The new cd is supposedly no neps and all tim. If so, I can't wait.

Except you can hear Timbaland in the song ("the damage is done so I guess I'll be leaving")! Anyway, the Neptunes did the album's other big hit, "Rock Your Body."
I've heard "SexyBack." Err...

JB still rocks
JT did pretty well with his last album. Good production and strong songs all around. Little bit too much MJ homage at times but still...
Interesting to see where he'll be heading.

Yeah, he's way up in his seventies (no one actually knows exactly how old he is). I took that picture when he was playing here a few months ago. Kick-ass

You can probably make some extra cash by licensing that photo... nice shot.
