I need to replace my iMac and I was wondering if I should buy the new duo. On macrumors buyers guide section it says that its nearing the end of its cycle and will soon be replaced. Can anyone tell me around the time Apple will update.

Will the new Intels edu pricing be the same as they are now for the duo?

tnx for the replies.

The other problem is is the wait times and when they release a new product. With PPC it took weeks to months but now that they're using Intel will the wait times be that different? tnx.

Intel has much faster cycles than Motorola and IBM did.

The iMacs work well.

Here's what I tell my customers:

There is ALWAYS a new model around the corner, and it is ALWAYS released immediately after you buy yours - seeing as if you buy a machine every three years, a couple of months is pretty much "immediately", but a couple of months is actually almost the complete product lifespan before an upgrade, when you're buying digital equipment.

If you need it, and it does what you're prepared to spend a certain amount of money for, then buy it. It won't stop doing what you considered it worth the dollars for just because the new model can do more or is cheaper or whatever (and it WILL be. Always.).

Buy, put on the blinders, ignore everything new, and enjoy your product.

Exception: something like the iBook G4 just before the MacBook was due.

With the switch from MOT/IBM to Intel it's become both easier (major revisions on published roadmaps) and harder (minor revisions with already available chips) to predict when upgrades will drop.
When Conroe and Merom drop in July and August, respectively, I expect we'll see upgrades to the Apple product line. But there are already faster Core Duos available, and Apple could start using them tomorrow.

Might as well buy. I mean, will it really matter much to you if it got a minor speed bump?

How about wait a month to see if apple releases an upgrade...the old one will go on sale and with the $$$ you save you can buy a new ipod.
