I helped my father in law get DSL and it seemed really cheap (about $20 a month or less). And realized that I was paying about $50 for 768 Kbps - Up to 1.5 Mbps downstream. Now I'm getting ripped off somewhere here... I've been with SBC Global/AT&T for 3 years... how can I get the cheaper rates? Or is this the typical scam where the 'loyal' customers get shafted and only NEW customers get the deal? I'm just really agited right now about the whole thing! I know many people insanity too! Any thoughts or suggestions?

You must renew your 12 month contract with SBC (now AT&T) to continue getting the low rate. The newest special is somewhere between $12.99 - $15.99/month.

So as long as you just call to renew, (can you do this online?) you'll get the lower rate? I just never really thought about that. Thanks guys wish I decided to rant on this earlier.

Thanks agasthya, they only show the upgrade speed that's one above my current speed level... Maybe I should call in to try to get the 6mbps upgrade? Or can I ony upgrade to the 'offered' 1.5 to 3.0 Mbps??? I was thinking that getting the 'fastest' would be best as there are 3 wireless and one wired computer on our network...

Verizon offers 768k for about $15 here. I am amazed when I tell people to drop dial-up and get it and they always respond with "Well, I only pay about $20, so I wouldn't be saving much by switching". [/BASH HEAD AGAINST BRICK WALL]

I'm seriously considering dropping my Comcast high-speed service ($45.99/month) for the new $17.99 AT&T rate. Slightly slower speeds, but well worth the cost savings. I haven't looked to see what the other fees and hidden fees are though...

I have Comcast 8mbs for $20/month. It was a special they offered to DSL users, and the pricing lasts for a year. I figure that I'll be able to move back to DSL after 12 months if they jack the price too much. I've never had a monthly limit on DSL or cable (I've used CableOne/AT&T in the past).

Broadband prices are still ridiculous (not that I don't pay it ::grumblecake:
I found that most of the low DSL prices are attached to MSN, and therefore are using non-standard methods (PPPoA?) and leaving mac users (and networks) high and dry. Anyone else found that, or has it been too long since I looked?

Sad...around my hometown the best we get is 256K for $45/month. Right now I'm living off campus getting 5 or 6 Mb, IDK how much it is, I think it's bundled with our digital cable.

AT&T's yahoo sbc dsl dealie has never been that way. I've never had a problem using a mac, or a router.

The problem with DSL prices is that DSL requires a land phone line, so if you don't have one already, you can add about $20 to the cost of any of those plans.

So? You shouldn't use full names on forums if people ask you not to.

Look.. I really don't care if I knew your name, but I don't. So don't use mine. Also, you calling me Robbie is quite an obvious attempt at belittling me, and it's really pretty sad. I'm sure your daughter is proud that you go around trying to call people kids names on the internet to mess with them.

OK robert podell. Sorry you're so thin skinned. I guess you're one of those big spoon/little dish kinda guys. You like to heap it on but can't take the heat when it's directed at you. I guess you're just a little sensitive guy.
BTW: I am going to keep using your name as long as you keep posting on here. You put it out there, I am going to use it.

I'm not a big spoon little dish guy. I'm for equality. I don't know your name, so I'm asking you not to use mine. I've asked you politely to stop about 5 times now, and you refuse. It shows how mature you are.
For the record, I can take the heat, and I would have no problem with you using my name if you gave me yours. So what do you say? Give me your full name and then you can feel justified in calling me mine. But until then, you're just a big spoon little dish can't take the heat, ie huge pussy kind of guy.

But you already broke your promise: you called me a moron and a sensative bitch... without any provokation. You just suddenly put your blasters to full and started calling me names, when we were even agreeing on something. So.... lies. You don't abide by the rules either.

Nice and cheap and very good service.

Railroader was never punished for any of this. I'm reporting all of them. He's done more than use an old username, he's trying to spread personal information about me, and I've asked him many MANY times not to do so, and he won't stop.

Yeah, months after this. He was never punished for using my name back here. Ever.
Also, I'm pretty ****ing pissed off that some admin feels the need to BAN me for using Kilbey accidentally (notice I'm not calling anybody Kilbey right now so it's okay to use it).
Here's my reasoning:
1. Railroader's OLD USERNAME THAT WAS POSTED OVER 1000 TIMES ON THESE FORUMS BY HE HIMSELF WAS KILBEY. It's a USERNAME, not personal information.
2. I met him when he had a username Kilbey. I still think of Analogue Sprinkles as SWG, and Laminar as Gossamer. First impressions last a long time.
3. He is merely complaining of my use of Kilbey because I complained about him using MY FULL NAME on these forums.
4. I am not using a modified 'childish' version to attempt to demean him. He called me "Robbie" so many ****ing times, without any repercussions, and I'm not doing that. I KNOW this guy as Kilbey. He POSTED as Kilbey. His USERNAME was Kilbey.

As long as there is no competition in the DSL market, the prices will remain high.
