really sucks but someone stole my dads g5 from his his apartment along with countless other things. He's going through a hard time dealing with this. I want to get him a new one but i was just wondering if there is any other hope in recovering his computer like using a tracking system. Do you guys know if i went to the apple store, they could help me out? do they use gps or somesort of tracking? or should i just buy him a new one? should i go down to the apple store? Thanks guys

There is really not much you can do about it. I would just get a new one. The only thing that you could probably do is look on ebay for the next few weeks and look for a G5 that matches the specs exactly and is in your area, I bet they will end up selling it somewhere. That really sucks, someone stole my dad's PowerBook once.

There are a few commercial tracking solutions available, but they have to be set up in advance.
One thing you might check. Contact your ISP with a copy of the police report showing the G5 was stolen. See if they will flag your account for any activity, in case the thieves use your G5 to do some surfing. If they did, your ISP can almost certainly tell where it logged in from.
It would be rather stupid of them to use the G5 without wiping the HD first, but then we are talking about thieves after all.

If your dad has a renters insurance policy, he can recoup the cost of many of his items that were stolen. Subject to the deductible, of course.

I would go to your closest apple store and bring a copy of your police report and see if they can attach it to the computers serial # in the database so if anyone brings it in and they pull it up then they will see it is stolen and can contact the police. Thats probably all apple can do.

If you have the serial number, you could send it round all the nearby Apple dealers and repair centres. Ask them to look out for it.

After reading countless stories like these, I decided to purchase Undercover for my iBook. It's well worth the $30 price tag.
NOTE: Undercover requires OS X 10.4 Tiger.

People laugh at me for keeping a padlock on the back of my G5 and a security cable on my 12" book. One week later, their house is robbed, including their blackbook. KARMA!

I miss the days of the G5 and XPS Pentium 4 running side by side as high-end machines.

Are you sure that is something an ISP would share directly with you and not the police?

Remember, it's the OP's account. 'He' pays for it each month. He has every right to know if there is activity on it. The only unusual thing is to want to know what number was used to call in from. Even if the ISP won't share that with the account owner, they can certainly share it with the police.
Side note, gotta love the guys we help, who come back and let us know how it worked out.
