There is TONS of cool, free art on there. And Kevin... so what? I really don't care if there's pro terrorist pro nazi **** on there. It is LEGAL in this country to have a pro nazi or pro kkk or pro terrorist opinion. If you want to make art to support it, go for it. That doesn't mean I have to like it, or look at it.

Yeah, I was referring to cash's examples as well. I still might think some of his are kind of cool, and I like some of yours RAILhead. Whether they move me or not is entirely personal - since cash seems to forget that everyone who views art brings their own point of view, experience, history to the viewing.

In a way it's more interesting that people have different reactions, as opposed to something that's supposedly universally accepted as "great" or"cool" or "moving" or whatever. Plus without knowing the context you miss out on a lot.

Some of the great classics are are classics not so much for their technical prowess but for the context in which they were created.

That's not why I'm a fan of art, I'm too much of an engineer. Things need to be measured and mathematical and stuff, but you just can't do that with art.

I highly respect those that are good at it. I'm just saying that what is considered 'good' is so subjective that the engineer in me cannot compute it. My GF takes some great photography and I enjoy looking at the pictures you guys post. I'm not dissing artists or saying that art is dumb. First of all, to say there's no math or rational thought in art is simply ignorant. Have you ever been to a museum? Or studied art history? I mean who hasn't heard of the renaissance? I'm not sure I understand what you define as art.

It doesn't necessarily have to be "about" context, by the way. But like with anything made, there's a story behind, a process, a reasoning - often some of the greatest works of art have pretty darned interesting stories, and the greatness of the artist is revealed not only by his ability to create a work of art (aestheticly pleasing to you or not) but to make decisions that are in and of themseleves revolutionary in their context.

But people like yourselves would rather remain ignorant as to the reasons behind the particular work. So be it.

I never said there was no math, etc, in art. I said "what is considered 'good' is so subjective that the engineer in me cannot compute it." I have nothing against finding out a work's background. A lot of wartime photos, for example, have a lot more meaning when some context is known. But when a photograph is good simply because of the person that took it, even though I could have taken the same picture, I don't like.
