Im in need of a dire computer upgrade. I am currently using a 12" Ibook G4. I am on the computer alot doing things like just surfing the web, checking email, and chatting. I also do alot of advanced things like Web design with adobe photoshop and Dreamweaver, Im using the terminal quite often along with XDarwin and X11, I have TONS of music, I also want to get into video editing, and Im a photo geek so I have tons and tons of pictures that I edit. Ive never taken my iBook out of the house. It stays on my desk except for the few occassions where I browse the web or write an email while laying in my bed or on the coach or something. I was wondering what mac would be right for me? Do I need a laptop or do I need a desktop? If I get a desktop should I wait for the Mac Pro or go with a iMac?

Dell.

Definitely a Dell.

Seriously, you didn't mention price. There will likely be a huge price difference between a Mac Pro and the iMac.

An iMac should be good for what you want. Whatever the new tower is will obviously be better, but that's always the case. In most cases, it's mainly overkill and will be massively more expensive. I would get an iMac unless you really think it will be insufficient for some reason (which it shouldn't be if you're using a 12" iBook now!).

1,299 iMac. You will still have your iBook to use when you want portability, which it doesn't sound like you use that much.

My sig is 1 pixel too big.

It sounds like a MacBook or Mac mini would work well. All those tasks would work great on those machines. You could also go with an iMac as well if you intend to play a few of the newer games. From what I understand, the iMac has a socketed CPU and you can even buy a faster CPU later if you want a relatively cheap upgrade. So the iMac wouldn't be a bad computer either.

You also might want to wait until August to see if any new Mac Pros come out, and purchase the low-end Mac Pro. That'll allow you future upgrades, especially if the CPU is socketed. You could later invest in a nice video card if you decide to get serious with your video editing (CoreVideo effects for real-time transitions.)

iMac in my opinion, as well.

By the way, you might want to change your sig to fit the 200 x 50 guidelines. Just a heads up.

I still don't get these retarded sig guidelines. We have a forum filled with graphic artists, and we can't even give them 100 pixels high to work with. Yet we'll fill the forum with retarded processor bogging smilies that I have to use pith helmet to turn off.

Slippery slope...give them 100, they'll want 150, then 300, then 4000, you know how it goes. But perhaps less is more? Requires more creativity!

I would need more information about the coach before being able to offer you solid advice.

I agree, and the width could be a lot longer as well…um, not that width matters…

Shore 'nuff!

I would kind of like 100 pixels to work with myself, but then again it would kind of clog up the threads. I just fix that by posting too many images to go along with my comments. Actually...I just made up my mind - I like the 200 x 50. *pounds the gavel*

If you want to do graphic art, do graphic art. A signature ≠ work of art. I hate other forums with gigantic mother****ing signatures of Japanese cartoon babes with crescent-moon eyes waving at the reader.

I'm in favor of you getting an iMac. It's got good bang for the buck, and will do all of the thing you want to do with it well.

I am also in favor of the current sig guidelines.

I don't see any reason for you to shell out for a Mac Pro... grab a 20" iMac and enjoy.

I'd go for wider signatures myself. It's like 4:3 with these sigs. We need widescreen!

Nobody wants to look at a cartoon of you in 400x100. Seriously. It's creepy enough as it is.

What kind of processor you got in that thing? A 68030?

You know you want the replacement for the G5. Why did you even post here when you know in your heart that's what you want? It's apparent from your post. Go with the Mac Pro.
