I hear you. I'm completing my masters in finance, but I don't really have all that much experience. It's pretty painful looking for jobs.

Get out of Nashville.
40k is peanuts in DC, Boston, NYC, etc.

Sure, it's peanuts because the cost of living in DC, Boston, NYC, etc. is so much higher. I'm not sure what the cost of living in Nashville is like, but 40k might cover it.

That said, there are more opportunities in bigger cities.

To be honest, if you're asking on a Mac form "how do i make 40k plus" without providing any specific information, you're probably boned.

If you have sales experience, renting cars is not the place to be.

Do you have a degree? In what? If you have a solid track record of selling month over month, many places will train you (think 8 week boot camp)

If you want to do sales, go high end if you can sell. Pharmaceuticals and enterprise level storage are two that I can think of.

You know that you have to pay your dues in real life and that everything is now automatic. You have 7 years experience so you are in your late 20's. Complain about it if you are in your 40's and you still make minimum wages. This is not the movies it will take time before you get to make over 40k +.

I just came back from an interview w/ Morgan Stanley for a financial advising role (salesmen in a suit) and i dunno if i should take it. I hate sales, but i need to get my foot in the door. I have no sales experience watsoever.

It'll take forever to find the job i want (research/market analyst).

PC nailed it, as well as the folks mentioning education + experience.

I just popped what I consider my first high paying job a couple of months back. It is a lot more work than my previous position and it involved a relo of the entire fam...but longterm, I believe there is room for growth and I put in 8 years w/ my previous employer working my way through the ranks...

What I find is that it's kind of dangerous driving in those wrapped cars...

the only advice i can give you is if you can't find what you're looking for in nashville, you need to start looking for jobs elsewhere and once the offer's been made, negotiated, and signed for, you'll have to move. assuming you're not married and don't have any kids, you've got absolutely nothing to lose.

now is the time to be taking chances in advancing your career.

if you have any sort of network at all, use it. also look at the job sites, especially craigslist.

good luck.

The problem isn't finding a good job, it's finding a job that's good for you. My current job is really pretty great by any objective standard. However after nearly two years at it I've decided that it's really just not for me. So Friday will be my last day, and after that I'm going freelance.
