Nordic Walking uses specifically designed poles to engage the upper body during fitness walking. Nordic Walking was first used as a summer training method by cross-country skiers. It was then developed into a fitness exercise with specific training equipment in co-operation with the Finnish sports equipment manufacturer Exel Oyj, ...
what is this bullshit
I see these people walking while dragging expensive sticks (TM) behind them. It looks ridiculous.

You're about five years behind the trend.
Recent studies have proven that Nordic walking burns absolutely no more calories than regular, brisk walking.
HOWEVER: At least in Europe, it has brought a lot of people outside getting, active who'd only been sitting around on their asses, who would never have got into exercise otherwise, so that's a Good Thing™.

well it's just silly to invest 130 euro's on a pair of sticks that you drag behind you (not to mention the matching Nordic shoes, gloves, stickbags and socks) , if you want to burn calories faster than walking , why not walk around with a heavy backpack or someting
walking doesn't burn that many calories anyhow, the human body can walk around for an hour on 1 mars candybar.

But that's not the point. Walking with sticks creates a momentum that makes your spine relaxed and supple.

Isn't this basically NordicTrack, but without (most of) the machine?

Are they like hiking polls?
I use hiking polls all the time and they are nice for a few reasons. While making large accents/decents, it gives your more stability. They also keep your hands higher when walking... so they don't swell.
Just my 2 cents.

as you might know. Holland is flat. You can't hike here except for a walk thru the dunes.
The sticks(TM) are just dragged behind the walker
edit : I should have stated earlier that I live in the Netherlands..

They don't stick them in the ground?

Why not just pick up a couple of sticks from the ground? Same effect, no?

I like my water with hops, malt, hops, yeast, and hops.

Of course not! These are specifically designed for your height, athletic ability, etc. which you could definitely NOT do with a stick and a pocketknife.

I'm going to strap a garden hoe around my chest with a rope and take a jog through the neighborhood.

Oh retardo-sticks. Yes, very favourable among old people since three-four years ago up in Nordic-land.
