This is a hard one.
Alice in Chains, Soundgarden, Nirvana
But I have to agree with Kev, Jane's Addiction rocks, so maybe tied with SG.

Interesting that all those brit bands - Oasis, Pulp, Blur, Radiohead, etc aren't being mentioned.

Pearl Jam is very much still around. Drummer Matt Cameron from Soundgarden even joined them several years ago. Their latest self titled album is some of their best work to date.
Oh yeah, and they are one of the best live bands ever.
But to answer the question:
1) Pearl Jam
2) Nirvana
3) RATM & Soundgarden

Probably because they are pop-bands, not rock.

Oasis was straight up "**** you" rock n' roll. Blur could crank out some kickin' tracks, too. Radiohead was reminiscent of the great stuff of the late 60s and early 70s.
However, I think the original spirit of this thread seemed to be a bit more of the American flavour (nothing wrong with that!). I certainly think that Smashing Pumpkins should be on the list. Albums like Siamese Dream and Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness aren't being made right now by anyone.

I disagree. Their height of popularity in the mid to late nineties was based on pure britpop. Blur was great, and but even moreso Pulp. Radiohead had two albums in them with alternapoprock - all downhill from there culminating in the moanandgroan solo album that Thom Yorke has out now.

Primus is still my favorite band.
FYI, Temple of the Dog was a tribute to Mother Love Bone.

Oasis wasn't that good. Quick to Blame was **** you rock and roll, Oasis was a "let's make a band to get laid."

I've only heard one track from Yorke's new album, but I enjoyed. Hail To The Thief needed three songs to be cut out of it, and it would've been a tight album. But even then, Pablo Honey is just a good sunny afternoon album; The Bends is an awesome rock album; OK Computer is still one of, if not the best, album of the 90s; and Kid A was an excellent follow-up.
I do agree that it was Britpop, but at the same time, I think it's a somewhat misleading term as far as Oasis (and to a lesser extent Blur) is concerned as they really cranked out rock n' roll British-styles. I doubt you'd ever hear Noel or Liam refer to it as Britpop; the both of them will just say they play rock n' roll.

Primus is bad-ass.
Have you heard Les Claypool's Frog Brigade do Pink Floyd's Animals album live?

From what I remember of it, it was. Singapore Slings and Long Islands. Anyhow, Claypool plays there every year, mostly with the Brigade.

FYI Pearl Jam's Jeff Ament and Stone Gossard were both in Mother Love Bone.
Also, the short but widely popular song "Lukin" by Pearl Jam was a bit of a tribute to Matt Lukin of Mudhoney.

Isn't that more metal?
Smashing Pumpkins seems like a legitimate middle of the road rock band.

Narh. No self-respecting rock band would use "the Pumpkin chord" in every song.

Fair enough. I guess I look at it as a continually changins sound (no genre sounds the same decades apart).

Much love for Yngwie, though I'd place him more in the 80's. Everything after "Eclipse" is kinda, blah. That is, until "Genesis" and "Unleash", both of which are pretty damned good.

Me too. I was just illustrating the fact that Yngwie is laughing at the notion of corporate geek pop and Brit crap being included as "rock".
I tell ya, I open Kerrang these days and the first thing I do is tut, shake my head and think "kids these days".

I can't believe I forgot Tool. By far, the best rock that came out of the 90's. Marilyn Manson's first mainstream album, Portrait of an American Family, was really good too.

I'm 32, so I've been listening to U2 for a while...I happen to like all the phases that the band has gone through. It keeps it interesting...I mean I'm not crazy about Bruce Springsteen because to my ear he's been putting out the same music over and over again. U2 has changed, and I like the changes.
Simple as that...

1. Radiohead
2. Nirvana
3. I Mother Earth
Tool, The Smashing Pumpkins, Soundgarden and Godspeed You! Black Emperor round out my list as close seconds, but those three can't be replaced from my listening preferences. I Mother Earth's Scenery & Fish in 1996 would rate as my single favourite album, I think.

If we're leaning towards more hard rock then NIN definitely deserves to be on the list.
