Roads have been melting in parts of England as the heatwave across most of the country continues.
...
Heat caused railway lines to buckle in the Midlands, while glass panels fell at a Newcastle bus station.
We're proper good at making things here in Blighty.

"Monday was the year's hottest day so far with a reading of 32.7C (90.9F) at Heathrow."
Your roads melt and windows fall out at 90 degrees?? That is pretty crazy.

Just a note to our USA friends.
Air Conditioning is somewhat of a luxury over here. Most smaller offices, shops, Shopping Malls & public transport don't have it.

We don't have AC here in Wpg and I've been doing OK getting up around 35 C. Actually OK I live in the basement... and I've refused to do a lot of tiring things in the heat. I hate summer.

when it snows it stops trains as well. Also leaves on the line.
reasons: wrong type of snow/leaves
obviously it's the wrong type of heat.
tube is nuts this time of year - so hot and sticky, especially when it's packed.
I find supermarkets are good - v cool.

This time of year I usually just sit outside in the shade, get drunk, and make cinema plans w/ friends over the phone. At least the cinema has a cooling system.

Especially the ones with walk-in freezers for frozen goods. Grab a lawn chair from the bbq section, slap an EV-DO card in your laptop, and you're good to go.

Oh, I forgot to mention... ...last night my phone went out...
DSL part, fine.
Dialling out, fine.
Listening to other people, fine.
Actually talking or selecting in-call menus, nope. Not a sausage*. It's like it fell back to pulse dial or something.
So got the mobile out and phoned someone not so far away, who's on a different exchange but in the same area. Just to test things. Their phone was playing funnies too.
I had visions of the entire server room at the local hub having had a clusterbump, due to the heat. You know, bits of multiplexer sitting on the floor in liquid form.
It went alright again today. But it's left me with an even stronger notion that the entire country's made from MDF and paper-clips.
(* guess what? Yes, the only way to get a line test requires the use of an in-call menu system. Typical.)

Aaaaagggghhhhh! It's hot everywhere! Seriously. I left New England for GA and they have had hotter days than we have. WTF? Of course we get humidity and they don't. BUT! Half the houses there don't have A/C.
Are we all gonna die this summer?

It's been over 34C (93F) here. The hottest I've ever experienced is 44C (111F) many years ago. And no our buildings and roads didn't fall apart.
BTW, a dry 44C is OK. We played basketball in that heat. However, 34C with high humidity absolutely sucks.
We don't have AC here in Wpg and I've been doing OK getting up around 35 C. Actually OK I live in the basement... and I've refused to do a lot of tiring things in the heat. I hate summer.
If your landlord won't get you AC, why don't you just get a cheap window AC unit?

All this humidity stuff is new to me, so I went to have a read about it...
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heat_index
A typical measurement in the United Kingdom in the hottest areas in the hottest type of weather generally has temperatures that can get above (1) about 90 °F (32 °C) in the shade with 50% humidity which on the humidex chart is 104 °F (40 °C) in the shade and 119 °F (48 °C) in the sun. You should note that humidex and heat indexes are taken in the shade and not the sun; so extra care must be taken while in the sun! For the record, (2) temperatures reached 101.3 °F (38.5 °C) in Kent in mid August 2003 which is the national record; assuming that this was 50% humidity; it would have a humidex of 126 °F (52 °C) in the shade and 140 °F (60 °C) in the sun. Of course in such extreme heat, the likelihood is that the humidity fell and the humidex was not quite that high.
According to the BBC, it's 53% relative humidity at the moment. So today would have followed example 1, almost exactly. The forecast seems to indicate that example 2 is possible tomorrow.
I have no idea what that means in real terms, other than it's bleedin' hot.

If you want all around crazy weather move to Raleigh. It was 100 today... we'll have a couple Hurricanes and Tornadoes before the Fall.. and then in the Winter we'll have a couple snow storms that will stop everything for a few weeks or so. There's absolutely nothing stable here.

OK, really. This heat everywhere is a bit ridiculous. I spose we can do ab-so-lutely NOTHING tho. So, how do we escape the heat?
I like the pool for a couple of hours, the A/C (in the RV) for a bit and maybe the beach on the weekend.

I don't know, the heat never really bothers me. I live in Atlanta and was outside all day directly in the sun. It was 96F/36C here and humid. Just doesn't really bother me though.

Out in Arizona it's been around 43~45C (110-115F) for the past couple weeks. Trust me, it still sucks balls, even though it's a dry heat. It finally cooled down the past few days, but has been humid as hell (at least for Arizona... ANY humidity when the temp's above 100F is too much humidity). Damn heat.

We had a couple of weeks hovering around a dry 30 C (90 F), with no rain in weeks. It's nice, never gets hotter than that. Of course, the sun is up for a ridiculous amount of hours, so some people still find it scorching.
Cooling down a bit for now, but I suspect it'll be back.
It seems the warm, dry streaks keep getting longer each summer

It drives me crazy here!
I go from it being 90+ outside to 65 inside... and then I wonder why I'm sick all summer long.
I just wish the people that controlled the office I work in that it doesn't need to be this cold during the summer! They do just the opposite in the winter 80+ inside... when it's 30 outside.

That does sound too cold even for a summer day. The problem with office HVAC is that every single person who works there has a different comfort level. One person is freezing at 72 degrees while another sweats at the same temperature. There is always a war between me and my officemates over temperature.

Even if the days are bad, the nights are more important to rest. Are the nights in the cities listed above cooler. I know in most parts of the United States homes have air conditionning. But, not in England, so over this beautiful land of yours do you have cool nights. I know in Paris it is a big problem right now. Is this summer worst or better than last year. I am worried mostly about older people.
