What does a company like Apple do with its old stock. Do they destroy it or give it away?

Prob destroy it and write it off.

I've seen big companies throw brand new products in the garbage so they can write them off. Actually I worked in a big chain store in 1996 for a month before christmas. One day I go into the back and I see them throwing about 100 brand new large stuffed toys in the trash. I said to them that I would personally take them all to some shelter or foundation so they can be given away as gifts to poor kids at christmas. They looked at me like they were going to fire me.

Someone else pulled me aside and said not to ask questions because they can't write it off if they donate it.

****ing bastards, I almost quit.

"Hello, what have we here?

Apple apparently keeps very low inventories, at least now that Jobs is on board.

I believe they sell off most of their old stock through retail channels, including the refurb store.

They sell them...

Usually to chains, mail order, schools, etc. etc. They just keep lowering the price until they are all gone.

Yes, but it's been a long time since Apple actually had a product that didn't sell.

they mark it down until it sells. It's called "clearing the channel" and you can anticipate new models by watching it.
He can be fixed -- you can't.

I bought my Dad a B&W G3 300mhz off of a retail store online for $300. Now he's running 10.3.9 and Firefox....instead of IE and OS 9.2 on an old 7200. They had tons of old Macs, I'd imagine they are sold in bulk to these companies since a used Mac is a pretty awesome computer for the money.

Try and buy a $300 PC for a family member than never crashes, go ahead I dare ya.

My uncle is in the sound recording business and has gotten his Quicksilver G4 from someone who was going to throw it out.

I'd take a $300 PC over a G3 300 Mac any day. You can get this refurb for $300 CAD ($265) locally:

eMachines W3107
AMD Sempron 3100 1.8 GHz
512MB DDR
100GB 7200RPM HDD
Dual Layer DVD-RW
Flash Media Reader
Integrated Video
10/100Mbps LAN
Windows XP Home

Only one of my family members regularly crashes, and I have no idea whether he owns a computer or what he'd do to me if I tried to buy him one.

A refurb e-machines!?! Wow, where do I sign up[/sarcasm]

When my dads camera won't load or it freezes I'll have him call you for tech support.

OK, but only if I can call you for tech support when my DV cam won't load or freezes on my iMac.

Yes, my dad is alllll about shooting his own DV videos and editing them, except not.

All he needs is a reliable machine to surf the web, get e-mail, and load digital photos. OSX does all these without any "firewall" "spyware" or other junk associated with Windows.

So yeah, I set it up, it works fine, I'm all done.

Thank you Macintosh!

Mac OS X has a built in firewall and it's a good idea to use it.
