I read a review of the Core 2 Extreme X6800 (I know, I know, horrible name) and it sounds rather good.

Apparently it is faster than AMD's Athlon 64, and is a lot more energy efficient.

Any chance these will be making it into mid-range Macs any time soon?

Apparently this guy had no problem upgrading his Intel Mini to Core 2 Duo, so Apple should include it as an option for customers, rather than forcing us to move up to a top of the line machine (as they've done with the MB/MBP).

The idea of upgrading sounds pretty sweet. I guess lots of questions will probably be answered at WWDC.

I know nothing about chips or motherboards, but according to that MacRumors article, the Mini and iMac are "socket compatible" with the Core 2 Duo. So if Apple doesn't include it, it shouldn't be too hard for someone like me to do it myself.

Since the high-end Mac Pro "has" to go with Xeon, I think the mid-range will too.
Avoids the hassle of multiple chipsets/number of RAM slots/number of drive ports/etc.

arstechnica has a pretty resonable and interesting article about this topic.

In their eyes, the Extreme version will probably not make it into the new Pro Macs. They account it's high price.

Personally, I don't see why there can't be a very expenisve very top of the line Mac Pro, even faster than the model replacing the Power Mac Quad.

The great part is you should be able to walk to Fry's, but an Extreme, and then throw it in your Mac without any problem.

What are you talking about?
The first Core 2 part to launch, last month, was the Xeon 51xx series.
