She may not have a choice, if her health insurance company is suing on her behalf to recover damages.

She has a choice. I saw where she tried to withdraw the lawsuit - which indicates a choice.
The fact is that it's her parent's fault for raising the kind of person that she has become: Someone who would sue her parents.
That or she has a democratic mentality and is trying to get something for nothing.

If you take the "poll" next to the article 86% of people said that they would NOT sue their parents.
Based on that poll you can safely assume that Americans are NOT prone to sue their 'rents.

That is still a pretty damn high percentage that would.

Actually, there were four choices in the poll and only 1% said that they would. 2% said that they might.

And the poll wasn't 'would you ever sue your parents,' but it was 'would you sue them under these circumstances' and there were multiple options.

I broke an ankle a couple years ago. If I recall correctly, medical bills were just over $1000, and I was back at school the next day, and the cast was off in a couple months. If she lost $75,000 in wages, she must have some EXTREMELY high paying job requiring manual labor.

This is despressing. It's your parents! It's not like you're a customer coming up to their door. A freakin' grown person ought to able to take care of herself.
I don't appreciate generalizations, But there is a western (and possibly American) mentality that whenever something happens, "someone is at fault, and it sure as heck isn't gonna be me..." How obnoxious.

She has every right to sue [yes, it's America... and everyone has that right]... but I hope she doesn't win.
I can already hear the door to door salesman foaming at the mouth at the chance to launch thousands of lawsuits.
"SCORE!!! I see they left their garden hose out! RUN!"

It's the point, don't you think?
If my kid sued me - or my insurance company - I'd never speak to that kid again. If the kid needed financial help then I'd help out. But I find it hard to believe that it took $75K to pay for her twisted ankle.
That kid would be dead to me...and my will.

Dude, if you were in London then the chances are that the woman you bumped into wasn't a Brit.
Anyways, back on topic. Her parents should have her for trespassing on their driveway.

Awwwww...
She lost wages?
Where is the world's tiniest violin when you need it? I feel so sorry for her. (NOT.)
The rest of the world works...with broken ankles and legs...sometimes with no legs at all.
They manage to get by.
Her mentality, "I should sue..." is one of the reasons the legal system is being ruined and why insurance rates are so high and why medical insurance is unaffordable to so many.
She's no better than those losers who took FEMA money in New Orleans to party at Hooters and buy plasm televisions.
She's someone who saw an opportunity to get some money and she took it. Period. Even if it meant milking her parents.
She's a loser.

Yes, things like that make me angry, you're right.
Her parents raised her and took care of her...and she sues them?
Don't you think most people would find that reprehensible and disgusting?
I don't always have the best of health but you know what? I manage to work and get by. I was a single mother working two jobs once - even while going to college and maintaining a 4.0 GPA. I don't have much sympathy for that crap. Also, I have a handicapped badge for my car because I have MS and sometimes have a hard time walking. I have never used it and never will (most people who know me don't know that I have it.) I don't see physical limitations as an excuse to receive special treatment.

No, it's 1% of people who took the poll (some 41,000 people). It's hardly representative of the whole American population.

Water in a store? That's another situation entirely...especially if your parents own the store.

your insurance company can certainly sue someone to recoup a clam that you made, they dont need yoru agreement a'tall. My previous carrier used to do that all the time. It was pretty damn annoying because every time you'd go to the ER or something a few days later some Indian chick would call and attempt to grill you about whose property you got hurt on, etc etc. Its actually extremely common and it wouldnt surprise me if that's at least partly involved here.
This annoying woman here in town that used to own a (failed) store or two and fancied herself something of a socialite since her family owns one of the countries larger uniform companies...well, it's Christmastime, at her brothers house and sorta drunk as she usually is. They were encouraging her to go home since they really arent big fans...in a pissy mood on the way out she stumbled and fell on the family dog. More than a little surprised, it turned and bit her ear off. I can't say it could've happened to a more deserving person.
Of course they felt terrible even tho it was sort of her fault. They paid her medical bills etc etc and then they stopped hearing from her for a while....and then the lawsuit showed up.
1. Get annoying and drunk
2. Fall on helpless animal.
3. Profit?

Incidentally, under that logic I should just sue my husband if I fall on water in our own home...I could get a cool $75K for my trouble...and I'd just pay a little extra in insurance premiums...which I could pay for out of the $75K.
