what would you recommend, i need one that i can use more than once without the filter clogging, preferably easy to clean. I'd like to keep it under 200 if possible

Bissell Lift-off Revolution with "wide cleaning path." The top parts lifts right off so that you can vacuum by hand up stairs or in a car, etc. It is a canister empty system - no bags - just detach the canister and dump the dirt/lint/dust into the garbage and put back on. 12 amps. Dual edge close cleaning (you can vacuum right next to a wall and it gets the dirt or dust up.)

Greyish Blue.

$129 from Wal=Mart.

I spent an hour looking at them and checking them over and this one was/is the best I've owned, ever, even including the Dyson.

It's great on high pile carpet or on tile or wood floors.

I highly recommend it.

BTW, the very worst customer experience is from Hoover and the best was from Bissell.

Good luck.

P.S. The Dyson will run you $500 did you know?

I spent $49 on a dirt devil vac at Target. Works great.

Personally I think anybody that drops $500 on a vacuum needs to be shot, and have their belongs sent to people in Somalia or something.

i have heard good things about Miele vacuum cleaners. They're very quiet, has very strong suction, and are built to last. my friend's aunt has been using hers for over 15 years now and still works great.

they'll set you back, but it'll last.

another option would be an oreck, they seem to be pretty good.

My dad has a $40 vacuum that is now 20 years old. He also has a shop vacuum which his mom bought in the 50s. You don't ahve to spend money to get them to last.

macfantn: Yes, that's it and it's not $158 in the stores. At least it wasn't where I bought it. $129.

Yes, VERY easy to use. Love it. I'm extremely particular about what I buy and this is the best one (the Bissell) that I've ever used. Shouldn't say this, but I will: I bought two of them. One is stashed in the closet and one I use now. I really like the vacuum a lot, especially since I can detach the top portion (easy) if I want to use in the car or stairs, small spaces, etc. And it works GREAT on my tile floors.

I've had a Dyson Animal for years. I love it. My success and satisfaction has convinced several of my friends to buy their own. It's expensive-yep it is!-but I think it's worth it.

Note that there are a few U.S. vacuum companies that are currently being sued by Dyson for patent infringement. I don't support cheaters. If a vacuum depends on multiple conical chambers to swirl the dirt out of the air, and it isn't made by Dyson, the patent owner, then I won't buy it.

But the mutliple cone chambers are just a gimmick anyway. I say the general public sues dyson for overcharging for BS.

I have a Dyson. It the Mac of vacuum cleaners. Like... a Macuum cleaner.

I know what you're thinking. "Should I buy the $149 Walmart version?" Well, to tell you the truth, with all this marketing gimmickry I kind of lost track of the number of cone chambers myself. But being as the Dyson, the most powerful vacuum in the world, could suck your head clean off, you've got to ask yourself a question: "Do I feel lucky?"

Well, do ya, punk?

I love my vacuum even if it's a Bissell. It does the job and does it rather well.

Dyson Animal. Love it. Had it for a few years. If/when this one dies, I'll but another one. Used to sell vacs (Kirby), so I know what I'm talking about.

I read somewhere that all vacuums over $100 are a con and aren't worth the money.

I mean, what makes a Dyson SO much better than another quality vacuum? I might have believed it two years ago, but technology catches up, you know?

Wow! So, let me get this straight: You read the above somewhere, so it must be true! Congrats on disseminating useful, scientific evidence.

I have had numerous vacuums and had little success with any- they all lost their suction EXCEPT the dyson I got 3 years ago. We've had ZERO problems and it's just as powerful now as before. Well worth the money.

That was a nasty comment and uncalled for Scott. Screw your comment and you too. Why are you a "mod" again? To make comments like that? Nice.

I was just making a comment - I never said it was true.

Have a nice night.

I couldn't see paying the exorbitant price that they wanted. I got a Eureka for a fraction of the cost. Perhaps it does lose its suction once the bag fills up but at least I save myself a two hundred dollars

Yes the Dyson works really well, but add the cunfusion in trying to unravel the hose and heads how to put it together and pull it apart for storage, it's down right hard to do at times. Also the price is way to much for what youre getting.
There are many other brands out there that work just as well for half the price. and are so much easier to use.

I'd have to recommend looking at Miele, Hoover, Electrolux, & Philips....thats if those brands are even available in the US.
if you can't be part of the solution don't be part of the problem!!!!

The one thing that seams to come out about Dyson Vac's is that people end up having the save ones for years and years (although the older ones where better built IMHO). We have a DC04 which was one of the early twin cyclone types before they started adding the extra multiple cyclones and it still works as well today as the day we bought it.
If you have a carpet, the day you run a dyson over the floor you will be amazed at all the crud you have been living with.
oh and to the filter question, we have never replaces/cleand ours. it's only a HEPA air filter, no dirt gets to it.
