Apple Education Trade-Up Program?

So we were inquiring about replacing a bad HDD in one of our teacher's G4 iBooks, and the Apple rep said we might be better off using their Trade-Up program (which started about 6 weeks ago?) They'll take the iBook in for a discount on a newer MacBook.

I think this is the first time Apple's done this kind of deal. It's education only, though.

Did anyone else know about this?

How much of a discount? Usually it is smarter and more profitable to sell the old on on ebay.

Perhaps for a personal user, but if you're talking entire labs, having Apple take the stuff off your hands would be easier for personnel and paperwork alike.
From Apple's site:
Yes, I'm interested in learning more about the Apple Trade-In and Recycle Program for Education.

To help us better understand your school or district’s trade-in or recycling needs, please complete the following form. To speak to an Apple Sales representative immediately, please call 1-800-800-APPL.

This offer is only available to education institutions in the United States. For schools outside the U.S., please contact us at education@apple.com.

I think it would be much nicer to offer it to students.

For free or for a price? Most school districts couldn't absorb that much to give them away.

I'm not aware of a Trade-Up program for individuals, but I take advantage of Apple's Trade-In program for institutions every summer. We replace ~1/3 (sometimes closer to 1/4) of our machines every summer on a rolling lease, and we sell the outgoing equipment back to Apple to help fund the lease payments.

Works out pretty well, overall.
