A-320 Cockpit View: Difficult Approach

This is recent video of an Airbus A-320 of SATA International making a final approach and landing at Funchal, Madeira Is., Portugal.
This airport is known as the "other Kai Tak" because of it's very difficult approach.

What's so difficult about it?

Honestly - I'm not a professional pilot (unlike half this board it seems!).

That is not a difficult landing at all. I had to land on much much more difficult with a lake at each end of the runway.

Granted it was not in a jumbo jet but still.

What runway is that where you can stand on the beach just feet from the start of the runway and have the planes fly right over. It is a tropical destination.

It is pretty crazy watching people stand there wanting to get blown away by jet engines.

Actually I would probably do it also but I would be picking the sand out of my teeth for a week.

There is also some runway where the poor pilot has to land on a downward hill.

In some asian country you practically scratch the roof of residential apartments.

That is deadly. He was being hit by wind-shear which can't be picked up easily without special equipment. It can literally turn a jet upside down right before you touch down.

The 320 is a VERY HEAVY plane, I'm glad it stopped before rolling of the other end of the runway.

When I was piloting I was also hit by wind-shear, scared the hell out of me. I was a few feet from the ground and all of a sudden my plan practically turned on it's side and the tip of the wing almost scraped the runway. It is even more deadly because when landing you are going so slow you are close to stall speed so when I was at that angle I almost stalled and would have fallen 30 feet to the ground in a big flop.

That was the Kai Tak Airport mentioned above a couple of times.

Hong Kong's old airport.

You approached in a sharp curve right along a mountain range, came out of that just a couple of dozen meters above the Kowloon housing projects, and then set down on a runway jutting out into HK harbour.

I don't think any real disaster ever happened there, though an aircraft would shear off the strip every once in a while and dunk in the water.

How NOT to land a plane.

But I'd imagine there was a great deal of skill at work here. And some luck?

So let me get this straight, the pilot and copilot sit there and the plane lands itself. Once on the ground they're needed to turn the engines off. Why not just use a stewardess to turn everything off once they're on the ground.

Landings in crosswinds. These look like Boeing test flights.

Many of you have already seen this video of a VERY realistic looking larger sized scale model RC, F-14 Tomcat, but for those who haven't, you'll enjoy this and if you have seen it, it never ceases to bring a smile to your heart, I'd bet.

This is a crosswind/sideloading test flight.
Notice the streamer on the vertical fin.

On another note, my father in law tells me that the approach into Pago Pago the surf will sometimes break OVER the runway. Completely over.

Real planes don't have hydraulics??
Suuuuure!!

But I'm ok if this one is in fact fake - the video I know is a different one but shows the exact same kind of weird landing...and IT IS A REAL PLANE!!!!

That is a remote controlled toy airplane. The video was made for a Dutch Heineken TV commercial. The undercarriage of any real plane would be smashed in circumstance close to this one.

It's fake..

(no there is no real video of this incident or a similar real incident. a real plane would have been severely damaged after such a landing if not written off)

Right now, you worry me. An engineer working in aviation should know better and also have spotted immediately that the video posted was fake like Pamela Anderson's chest.

First: I am not an aviation engineer and know not very much about how to build an airplane!
It's not like every engineer at Airbus (or Boeing) would be able to build an airplane on his own!

Second: You should tell that to one of our most experienced colleagues (worked as a test pilot and in many other areas for more than 30 years) who showed me a similar video in a training course (aviation basics) a few months ago and when I said that this has to be fake, he said "I know it's surprising but this is not fake - it actually happened"...well, I believed him because he didn't look like he was joking...

...but I never really understood how and why it is possible that a large airplane like this would jump up and down so fast!

So you're saying that because a video similar to this one is not fake, this one must also be fake, even though it's been made clear that your video was for a training program, and this video was made for an advertisement?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k8YkB...%20break%20off

Well, this should not happen - not even with a hard landing like this!
But it was a good thing that those pilots landed this hard and broke the tail because there had to be a severe structure problem and better your tail breaks on the ground than in mid air!!!

When I first said that this video is not fake, I didn't know that it was a commercial!

And all I am saying is that if this video is fake then the one I saw should also be fake (even so a trustable source said otherwise) because the exact same "bounci bounci jump jump" happened there!

And it seems just logic that this is a small airplane model (even though a trustable source told me something else)!

(btw: I'm not 100% sure if I really saw a different video!)
