Don't put words in my mouth; I never said it was racist. If he had said the same things about Daunte Culpepper, I would've basically agreed with him. Saying those things about McNabb was just stupid.
In fact, it was the opposite. He was saying they should judge McNabb on his skills not by the color of his skin. Criticize him like anyone else.
But he didn't criticize him like anyone else. He used a brief patch of poor play to say that McNabb was overrated, which is clearly untrue.
Show me the lunacy in that statement. Consider that McNabb was the lowest rated passer in the NFL at the time. Consider that the Eagles had been to two NFC Championships in a row (losing both), led by one of the best defenses in the league.
Then show me how it's lunacy...
It's lunacy for a number of reasons:
1. Before T.O., the knock on the Eagles was that their receivers were mediocre at best. McNabb led the Eagles to the NFC Championship game with James Thrash and Todd Pinkston as starters. How is that not impressive? Notice how his numbers skyrocketed when he got a great receiver. He's the only QB in history to throw over 30 TDs in a season (31) with less than 10 interceptions (9).
2. At that time, McNabb had more playoff victories than any starting QB.
3. The Eagles have always had running back problems in each of those years. Correll Buckhalter has missed every other year and both Brian Westbrook and Duce Staley missed a lot of time.
4. In the 2002 playoffs, McNabb led the Eagles (the #2 defense in points allowed that year) to a 33-19 victory at Chicago against the Bears (the #1 defense in points allowed). You don't think he had a big hand in scoring those 33 points against the league's best defense?
5. If you or Rush had bothered to watch any of the many games Donovan McNabb has almost single-handedly won, you'd know his performance transcends stats. He makes mistakes like anyone else, but time after time he's made a key throw or run that helped the Eagles win. I've seen all of the games.
6. The guy threw 4 touchdowns on a broken leg. Broken!
7. You do remember what happened that year, right? The Eagles won 12 out of 14 games to earn the best record in the NFC, McNabb completed 4th-and-26 in a comeback over Green Bay, and the Eagles lost in the NFC championship to Carolina because the receivers were blanketed.
8. The defense lost the first championship game against St. Louis because they couldn't stop the run.
9. The defense contributed significantly to the second championship game loss against Tampa (a team they had dominated that year and past seasons) because they couldn't tackle.
I could go on if you'd like.
