I'm looking to create a new domain but I have two questions

first is what is the difference between network solutions and godaddy.com. I could be wrong but it seems godaddy is cheaper - why, do I lose any services with a cheaper price. I'm just looking for someone to register my domain.

Second question is who should host my domain. I'm looking for a reliable (and inexpensive) host.

suggestins and things for me to avoid would be helpful.

Thanks
Michael

Lets make this easy.

Everyone will say godaddy sucks for domain registration and to use dreamhost for hosting.

godaddy is fine for registering the domain. I've done several.

As for hosting, there are so many options. Godaddy, vizaweb, etc. You'll get a lot of suggestions here.

It all depends on:

What you want to do with the site.
What you need (php, asp, etc.)

All my domains are with GoDaddy, for 4 years. Network Solutions is for people who don't like money and want to part with it as quickly as possible.

Try Lunarpages for hosting.

No personal experience but there have been all sorts of scary stories about them like domain squatting after doing a search for availability.

I did hear that but I had forgotton who was doing it.

As for my usage, just my personal web page, something to host my photography, so bandwidth isn't high, but it won't be low since images do take up space, also email packages and speed.

I want something faster then .mac so I'll be transitioning away from that once I have my ducks in a row.

My information may be out of date, but Network Solutions is the Official Keeper Of The Domain Name Database. NS is required to process requests from other registrars, though. So no matter whether you go through NS or through godaddy, the end result is the same: your domain name is registered in the Big Database In the Sky.

You may know this alredy, but keep in mind that once you register your domain, anyone can see the contact info associated with that domain by doing a simple whois query, including telephone numbers and addresses listed under administrative and technical contacts. You may not want to put your home address or phone number here, as it is regularly mined for information. GoDaddy offers an additional service which sets up a "proxy" for that information, so if someone needs to contact you about the domain, they can do so without having your e-mail address, snail-mail address, or telephone number listed in the database.

powerpipe.com has worked without problem for two of my domains. 8 bucks a year. Nice and simple.

I use dotster for my registration and dreamhost for my hosting....

Dreamhost gives you one free domain name with a hosting account.

Please check out GKG.net before going anywhere else. I've been dealing with them for nearly 10 years. They have excellent prices and the absolute BEST customer service. They also have the best online tools for hosting your own website (DNS registration and management.)

I just checked GoDaddy and the few domains I used GoDaddy to search for and open in the last few months have not been taken, so that pretty much kills that theory.

Perhaps they just saw no value?

You really think it would be 100% of all searches?

In comparison to dreamhost they're expensive.
I use dreamhost to handle the whole thing, registration and hosting. No problems so far.

Use 777 for dreamhost's promo code and get the first year of hosting and domain for $7.77

That's like 68 cents a month.

Thanks for your input, I signed up to dreamhost, did a 2 year gig and used the 777 code. That way the setup fee was waived, I was able to get a discount price and I was able to register my domain. Not quite what I wanted but close.

You could have used an even better coupon to get the first year (or is it two) for line $9 Total. But I wouldn't use a serious over-seller who will never let you use all that bandwidth and space. I pay $50/month for 20GB/200GB

With dreamhost? I just renewed for two more years. We pay $390 for this:

If this post is directed to me, I'm doing even better then the 9 dollars a month, I'm paying 7.95 per month for 20GB/1000GB at dreamhost.

dreamhost is far from bargain basement. I've been with them for years and have zero complains. Fast and good customer service, reliable service.

I have heard Dreamhost and Bluehost are the best. Dreamhost for value and support, and Bluehost for reliability and support.

I registered with godaddy once. They took a good few days to get the domain running. I needed it quickly, and as the DNS system can cope with 1 hour name creation, I registered another in the mean time. The second domain (at ukreg.com) turned up first! Godaddy's support were completely unhelpful.

What the nerd community most often fail to realize is that all features aren't equal. A well implemented and well integrated feature in a convenient interface is worth way more than the same feature implemented crappy, or accessed through a annoying interface.

Anecdotal stories ftw!

When I registered my last domain with Godaddy it was up in under 10 mins.

Well, surely that's what a board like this is for?

I actually objected more to their support taking a few days to respond to my email. A simple "Sorry, we're backlogged, accept our apologies" would have endeared them to me much more.
