"We pitted the Apple Newton Messagepad against the latest Samsung Q1 ultra-mobile PC (Origami project), and -- despite being a decade old -- the Newton won"

No surprise here. The Newton OS is still my favorite OS on the planet. It was stable, easy to use, fast and fun.

The current Palm OS is pathetic to the Newton os from the mid 90's.

Shame the hardware was so clunky.

I have a Newton 2100 and its great from the os and expansion factor...but it is huge, you just cant put it in your pocket and use it as an organizer!

I've never used a Newton myself, but I've heard a lot of good things about them.

The fact that people are still excited about them 10 years later means that something must be right about it.

PalmOS is better than WinCE, or PocketPC or whatever they want to call it. In PalmOS (or at least PalmOS 4, haven't used a Palm lately), I could quickly switch from app to app and get to the data I needed.

Last time I tried a Pocket PC, it felt too much like a PC. Minimize app, go to start menu, find the app I'm looking for, find the data file, etc. Palm was much better to navigate and get at my data.

Now I haven't really used either intensively in a couple years, so things may have changed.

Care to elaborate? Although there are some behind-the-scenes aspects of PalmOS that I'm not terribly fond of, it was defined for PDAs, unlike the monolithic App-That-Does-Everything that WinCE tries and fails to be (much like most of Microsoft's other products, actually).

Trust me, the Newton still kicks the **** out of any pda out there. It's simply amazing, and the fact that they are so old now speaks volumes of what they could be if Apple did something about it.

So, I bought an eMate two years ago. I couldn't figure out what to do with the thing. What would you DO with a Newton today?

A guy I went to college with used a Newton in class to take notes. Seemed like too much hassle really. The PDA was a fun idea (I owned a couple of Palms over the years) but honestly they seem to be on the way out. Cell phones seem to be taking over the basic functions most people used their PDAs for, and super mall laptops seem to be meeting the needs of most other people.

Though I would totally go for a Tricorder and a Dick Tracy watch.

The eMate really wasn't a true Newton, if you're trying to compare the two.

Apple should release an Origami killer...much like Microsoft's so-called iPod killer. Imagine if Apple released a new handheld that was as thin as the Nano. Even something as thin as the Video iPod would be cooler than those silly Origami things,

Oh, BTW, Newton was cool. Problem... the advertising... The ads said... What is Newton. People figured, well, if they don't know, we don't either and shied away.

I don't think in all the years I used my newton any app ever crashed once. Even on the 1.0.
