After posting in the tag thread, I reached over to take a sip of my ever-present Mountain Dew, and accidently bumped it leftward, spilling some onto the right side of my PowerBook. It was only a bit, but it appears to have hit my Firewire ports, which I cannot live with out due to the video work I'm doing this month. If this stuff doesn't work, I'm going to be in a tight, tight, tight, TIGHT spot.
I've never spilled anything on any computer...ever. Until now...
You guys think it'll be okay?

It should be OK... just dry it off ASAP. There isn't much voltage in Firewire... so it's not like it would short out.

What is up with all those reports of peoples ports shorting out then?
Even a tiny device like a watch can short out if you get it wet even if it is low voltage.

I had it dried off before I could even resume breathing. I'm sure it will be allright. I'll test it out later. It just made me have a short panic attack.

I knew the moment I posted that you would make a comment.
Yes, I realize EVERYTHING electrical can short out... and the port can short out as well. I was trying to convey that the ports shouldn't fail if there is a short. The port is designed to handle voltage irregularities including a short from a faulty device. It's not perfect and you can permanently damage a port with liquids or faulty devices.
I haven't seen an unusual number of reports of peoples ports shorting out.

One time I had a can of Dr. Pepper in front of an external CD-R drive, and for reasons we never quite figured out the drive decided to open. It knocked the Dr. Pepper right into the keyboard. We left the keyboard in distilled water for the weekend and let it dry out for a week, and then everything was fine.
To this day, we refer to this incident as the time that my computer tried to commit seppuku.

Great story
Sometimes I think computers get a little HAL-like.

FireWire 400 ports are notorious for shorting out. All you have to do is plug the cable in backwards, which the connector isn't sufficiently asymmetrical to fully prevent, and presto, no more FireWire ports. As far as I know, it's due to a design flaw in the FW400 connector, which, if I understand correctly, is why the 9-pin FW800 connectors look so much different.

wouldn't you have to be jamming it in blindly to put it on backwards?
