I was reading the ghosts thread and thought it might be interesting to hear about the strange experiences people on this board have had. Here's mine: When I was about 14 I was staying with at my grandmother's house in upstate NY. She and I were the only ones there because my grandfather was away on business. When we woke up in the morning our wristwatches where both 30 minutes slow.... Not sure what to think about that.... I should add that at that time I never took my watch off. so I was wearing it all night..

Your grandmother is a funny person!
Here's my story:
I was in Munich at that time - about 8 years ago (I was 25).
It was a nice summer evening and I was standing outside at a river looking towards the town until suddenly something looking like a New Year's eve rocket was going up in the sky (quite far away - looked like it was coming from the middle of the town).
It was definitely burning and glowing stuff was falling away from it.
The weird thing was that it didn't stop (like such rockets usually do after a few seconds) but it was flying towards the horizon until I finally couldn't see it anymore - I watched it at least for 2-3 minutes.
I have no idea what this could have been!!

A couple of years ago, i was walking our dog with my old chook late-ish at night (around 930) and we were looking up at these trees and there was this weird light shining on it. There were no cars about (we live in a fairly bush setting) and nobody we could see with torches. We kept walking for about another 100 meters and we see this thing in the sky that looked like a large star and was a very bright orange / yellow colour, brighter than the moon even. I continued to watch it for the next 30 minutes as we walked and it gradually got larger and brighter. By the time we got home it was quite large in the sky, but was now moving up and away from us. We are in a large river valley and we watched it until it eventually disappeared over a mountain range and disappeared.
Theres a lot of weird stuff that gets reported around this area (Tasmania and the Bass Strait) it was on some crap US UFO doco once about being a UFO hotspot. I rang the local UFO hotline (yep, its a one man show that couldn't afford to keep the listing in the phone book so i had to call call connect) and filed a quick report with him so he could see if anyone rang in with similar claims. No planes were in the area at the time and no sound was associated with the event. never heard anything from that guy though.
It was hell freaky to watch at the time, but sounds a little lame on the retelling.

I was once walking through a park at about 1am when I heard a low rumbling noise (like a distant stampede) about 100 feet behind me and getting closer. I could see where the noise was coming from, but there was nothing there. I starting walking faster, however the noise drew closer behind me. Within a few seconds it was no more than ten feet behind me, still invisible and I was running as fast as my legs could carry me towards the road. Then it caught up with me, loud rumbling and ground vibrating directly beneath my feet. It felt as though the earth was going to open up and swallow me.
A few feet from the road the rumbling fell behind me and stopped. I turned around under the streetlight, trying to see what was there in the dark - what had chased me out of the park. Suddenly the sprinklers in the park all went "WHOOSH" and I nearly ****ing died.
I had been running along an underground reticulation pipe that was filling with water.

Mine was 9:11 PM for several months. I finally just got rid of all my clocks - fixed the problem.

7:53 PM was the exact time you died 1 year ago. Ever since then you've been trapped on the earth because you can't remember you died.

Everything but the end sounds like something from a movie.

I was walking up a hill to an auditorium one afternoon at one of the youth camps I was helping with. I had recently injured my left wrist, so I was unable to use it. I was also carrying an arm-load of equipment, so I was basically walking with no hands. As I a approached the door, I realized it was one that had to be opened outward, which meant I couldn't push it open with my foot like I planned.
As I thought "this totally sucks," the door opened for me.
I was able to open the second set of doors with my leg, and all was well.
It's important to note that this was a foyer entrance, with outside doors, a small 4x12 foyer, then another set of doors. These were also the heavy "school-type" doors with the long push bars. There were no vents or air inlets anywhere, either, not that any amount could blow open the door. And no, no wind caught the edge.
I know what it was, but of course, I'm apparently one of the religious zealots on the board.

If you're implying God opened a door for you, it does seem a little mundane.

Yes, I was JUST thinking that this morning!
So, the house we just moved out of, I AM SURE, has very negative energy. Some would say haunted, I guess.
When we were in the process of buying the home the previous owner died of breast cancer. We were buying the home and she went in for chemo and had a bad reaction and went into a coma. Her ex-husband (and they have two children) was the only person who was able to be the guardian of her estate - and her life. After about 4 days he took her off of life support - and in so doing he became the recipient of her estate...and the money from the house we were buying.
Anyway, the point is that the house has had, at various times, very bad odors. We have had:
1. An ant infestation so bad one night - middle of the night - that not one square inch of a 2300 square foot home was visible on the exterior and required Terminix emergency services to come out and spray. There were mounds of up to 2 feet high of dead ants.
2. A rat infestation in the rear wall of the home - for no apparent reason. We smelled an odor (and we don't put rat poison out folks) and had to take the wall apart and inside the wall up to 10 feet high were 9 dead decaying rats in various places.
3. One day I was sitting there in my very clean home (I am fastidious) and across the floor goes a big black snake...it went behind the television...and never came out. I called my husband and he and a couple of employees came home and pulled the television out and there was no snake anywhere. I did not imagine it - I am positive of that. They ripped the entire home apart and never found the snake. But it was there. A week later I had my son (he was born) and there was a complication in that the cord was wrapped around his neck. An old lady who is a neighbor came down the street to see him when he was about 5 days old and we told her about the cord and she looked up and said, "Did you see or touch any snakes before he was born? It's a wives tale but they say that if you see any snakes or touch any snakes that the baby will have the cord wrapped around it's neck." My blood went cold.
4. Before we moved out we kept having the front door open and shut, open and shut, by itself, unless it was firmly locked. Same thing with the shower door. And there were two times when the toilet flushed. In fact, one night I was laying next to my teenaged son talking about his college plans when we heard the toilet flush in his bathroom. (Chills are going down my spine right now as I write this.) We looked at each other and peeked inside. Nothing or no one in there. Went down to my bedroom and my husband was fast asleep snoring in his bed.
5. The electricity would intermittently go on and off. Called out electrical engineers and they went over the entire home twice (two separate companies) and found nothing. No explanation as to why lights went on and off by themselves.
This year the odors have increased. There was a mildew smell that we could not eradicate no matter what we did. It got to the point where I was so stressed out about it that I would vomit when I'd smell it. Seriously - I did.
We decided to move out promptly.
Now we are in a new home and nothing creepy is going on.
But, I believe that there is very bad energy or negative energy in that home. I believe it 100%. If you'd have asked me 6 years ago before we moved into that home I'd have laughed at you, but there is no doubt in my mind that sometimes there is bad energy in certain places.

I've experienced too many things to mention, and I wouldn't bother posting them because of the ridicule, but I will say that these types of things do tend to follow certain people. I can guess why that is, it's most likely due to some individuals being "wired" differently than most.

I think you're right.
I won't mention something in particular, but I've had other very strange experiences, even as a child. Edited per MacNStein's advice.

It's quite possible. IMO, certain people are better receptors than others. This isn't to say that most can't learn to "see", but it just doesn't come naturally to them.

one night coming from the gym, something told me to go a differant way than i usually do, all the walks signs let me walk this differant way, no do not walk ect, and it just felt like something was guiding me (ever get that feeling?) i get home still feeling a little strange. next morning im walking to school and there are all these cop cars and i ask what happened, and the cop said there was a shooting last night at the time i was coming home from the gym. the shooting was on the same street and path †hat i usually take home from the gym.

I wasn't going to post this in the other thread, but I guess I'll share mine, since other people don't mind sharing their stories.
At 17, I was in the middle of a 3 1/2 year battle with severe depression, and I'd been borderline suicidal for much of that time. Really late one night, I was sitting propped up against the far wall of my room, writing out my suicide note, crying my head off. At some point (I only had a small light on to write), I looked up and saw a massive black figure on the other side of my room. I couldn't make out discernable features, but it was borderline 8 feet tall. The only thing that I could make out for sure were its eyes, and it paced back and forth for a good 5 minutes before finally I shook myself out of shock and ran down the hall, across the house, and into my parents' room. I hadn't talked to them in days, and I was supposedly this tough little agnostic punk pastor's kid in public defiance of his dad, but I fell into my dad and shook for several minutes.
The whole episode kind of shook up my parents, and I had been having trouble sleeping for months, so they asked me to sleep in the guest room for a night, which was located right next to their room. In the middle of the night, my mom said something woke her up, and she heard some noise from the guest room. Then she heard me cry out in pain, so she tried to get out of the bed, but as she tried to rise up, something grabbed her by the shoulders and pushed her back against the bed. She told me she heard me struggling in the other room, but she couldn't get up or speak. Finally, after several minutes, I stopped making sounds and the pressure came off of her shoulders. She got up to check on me, but I was lying there asleep, but the sheets were all over the place.
That's my story. Feel free to ridicule.

This is pretty minor compared to most of the other stories on here, but the other day at work I clocked out at 7:50, walked a long block to the subway station, and just missed the train. waited around for the next train, and it came. Got on, went the two stops to Penn Station, and got off. walked down the stairs and looked at my watch. It was 7:55. That's normally a 15 minute trip, or at least 10 minutes if I walk right onto a subway. I have no idea how I possibly got there that quickly. When I looked at my watch I thought the battery had died or something. But at least I didn't miss my train

Sounds like it was waiting to see if you'd go through with it or not. From the description you gave, I wouldn't try and blame the "guy", it's just "his" job. Just think of them as universal collection agents.
Not all of them are dressed in white*.
(*which is our subconscious coloring them according to our expectations.)

Take this for what it is (wild imagination of a young kid)...
When I was 14, a friend and I were hiking in Pennsylvania... about 5 miles from my rural home. There is a very defined path, and while walking up the far side of the hill, we came across what looked like a VERY large "animal" running about 40 yards in a perpendicular direction from us. It was VERY large, and brown/black from head to toe (which was odd because it was the middle of the summer). We both stopped, looked at it, looked at each other... looked at it again, and then turned and ran.
What was odd:
- the area isn't all that popular, so a runner/hiker would have been odd.
- it wasn't running on an established path
- it didn't have any color variations (from pants, to jacket, to hat). It was one solid color.
- it was large. I would guess over 6' tall and very broad
- the location would be well suited for someone that wanted to hide
What could it have been:
- a runner of some type
- some funny hazing ritual by the local football team
- strange homeless person (not all that popular in my area)
I would love to say I knew what it was, but I don't. I only wish I would have had a camera.
EDIT: I've had other things happen in my life that were unexplained, but usually I can put some logic to them (caught some strange light, someone playing a joke, etc.)

Didn't feel like he was there to observe, but to torment (which is why I don't think of him as the "guy"). For instance, even though I didn't see it before, I felt the same thing months earlier on a near-nightly basis. I also struggled through night terrors for most of my adolescence.

I think too many people shrug off the oddities in this world or take it to the extreme. I think most things are easily explainable... and very few aren't.
I'm not at all surprised when "ghost hunters" find ghosts.

Come on, you've got to be kidding me!
To make the matter just a tad more freaky, my girlfriend was also having the same problem of looking at the clock at 9:11, too. AM or PM, it didn't matter. We chalked it up to it having something to do with 9/11 being etched in our brains, or something.
Say what you will, but I have been in the presence of a very mean Poltergeist and a couple of nice ghosts at the same time (a preverbial spirtual gang-bang, so to speak). The Poltergeist arrived as soon as we found an old steamer trunk in the attic space. The trunk was in pretty bad shape so my girlfriend, being a crafty type of person, decided to fix it up and that's when the crap started hitting the fan. Four full bookcases shooting their contents at the same time into the middle of the room, pushing people while they were going downstairs, the trunk making it's way back into the attic, broken windows, angry voices, could hear something walking around upstairs, apparitions, lights blinking, etc.
Shortly after the poltergeist showed up, there was an introduction of two nice ghosts, one we're sure was my girlfriend's grandfather. We would see them walking about and the one we were sure was her grandfather, would sit on the bed next to her. The poltergeist attacks became less frequent over time and the nice ghosts showing up did, too.
Doing some research, we found that the previous owner of the house was a priest who went totally nuts, complaining of ghosts attacking him. He spent his last years holed up in a room (which, was hers) with the windows painted black and hundreds of crucifixes drawn all over the walls. Her house is also on a giant Indian burial ground, too.

I once went out with a really hot girl. That was pretty strange and unexplainable.

Call up Hollywood, I just came up with the plot for the newest horror movie!
IDK about the whole 9:11 thing though. If one was to mark down the time every time you look at a clock, and see how often 9:11 shows up, I think we simply notice it because it has a significance. Now if you actually did look at the clock at 9:11 both am and pm each day for a week or so, and rarely looked at the clock otherwise, that would be something else.

Being as I am religious, I believe in Demons. My old house had some stuff similar to yours. Lights would turn on and off for no reason. We'd hear footsteps when my sister and I were the only two in the house. But now for the "good part"
When I was 3, I was using the restroom which was right across from my parent's walk-in closet. Apparently I saw smoke and I called for my mom. There was TONS of smoke coming out, but when they opened up the door, there was no fire. Anywhere. Nothing was burnt. Creepy? THIS HAPPENED TWICE!
Also, one time I was walking from the family room into the kitchen when all of a sudden the computer goes "You've got mail!" I walked over to the computer and the speakers AND the computerwere off.
But we had my pastor come over and perform an exorcism on the house and all was well! Needless to say, we had my pastor come over as soon as we moved to block out anything in our new house lol.

According to the Midrash, the Egyptians felt that way too when those particular spirits passed by their homes in Exodus (referring to the final plague upon Egypt).
I've encountered them on several occassions. At times, they aren't pleasant, and they're downright terrifying when you aren't expecting them. Many times they're mistaken for something more sinister, but that's not part of their MO. Usually they're "colored" or clothed according the person's mood and spiritual state. Given your demeanor at the time, I'm not surprised you saw it in that light. It wasn't there to "observe", it was there to collect.
(just speaking from my experience, it might have been something different that you encountered. Just remember that not all things like that are "demonic".)

Your story made me shiver. I've had a number of hallucinations just like that. Many of them were of dark, hulky, blurry, partially transparent shadowy figures. Often only their face and especially their eyes would show fine detail. Normally they would just watch me while performing a repetitive motion like rocking in a chair or repeatedly checking a watch or something. The scariest one was probably this Medusa-like head on the neck of a dragon that repeatedly lunged at me from across the room. Up until then they had just observed me. The first I experienced was also very frightening. I woke up in the middle of the night to find a mother-of-pearl colored 8 foot diameter spider moving up and down the wall just 5 feet from my head. It had very realistic eyes and mouthparts too. I'm going to stop now because I'm giving myself the chills.

Saw a cigar shaped ufo and a bunch of lights with it. Everything involved far exceeded any modern aircraft I've ever seen, and I've seen my share of commercial aircraft and fighter jets.
Have repeatedly heard something on the porch outside walking, just a few steps. It sounds like work boots, a heavy, very discernable clomping. It is impossible to walk 2 or 3 steps on my porch and disappear, the porch is long and the yard is clear, and big. One time I heard this noise while standing right beside the door inside. I was on the porch within 2 seconds, and no one was there.

And you immediately jump to the less likely explanations for these observations?

I wasn't denying its plausibility. In fact, something like that is quite likely. It's just funny to me, and will never cease to be so. At least they're not beating the crap out of the guy.

Never seen a ghost.
What haunts people the most is the inevitability of death.
Notice how a lot of these ghost sightings all involve one of these things; knowing someone who has died, being depressed, or being stressed out. When the so-called ghost appears, this tends to be a moment of epiphany or change. Most likely this is the subconscious playing tricks on you, and as in the case of one poster's mother, she experienced classical hypnagogic hallucinations.
As far as "poltergeists," like the events in Cody's old house, there may never be an answer to what caused that. Creepy.

Mine is not a sighting, but a sound. I had never heard anything like it before it started. I had told my mother about it happening and gotten the "yeah...ok" look, then she was there with me the night I was at the door, and she heard it as well.

OK. What's the chance that now four people both have a weird problem with looking at the clock at exactly 9:11 ?
Neither my girlfriend or I look at the time all that often. I have a clock on the wall, in the car and on the computer. But, just getting into the car to run Saturday errands, it'll be, "Hey, it's 9:11...", or eating out and looking up at the clock, 9:11.
It's also not time-zone-centric. I thought it was our bodies "remembering" exactly 12 hour stints (hey, I'm grasping). But, we flew out to the west coast (and, we're EST'ers) and got into our rental car at...9:11. Woke up the next morning at...9:11. Pulled into the next hotel at...9:11.
It pretty much has subsided for now but every once in a while, we'll notice it.

Yeah, I know, it does sound rather..."convenient" of a story. But, I swear, it happened. We even brought in a Parapsychology team from the local University so they could do some studies when things were really bad. Where my girlfriend lived, well, the city pretty much, used to be an Indian village until they were driven out. The professor leading the team said that most of their calls came from that city because the Indians that were attacked were just dumped into a mass grave. They took some pictures and audio recordings and tried staying over for a night but couldn't - because, evidently, something had "happened" and they hurriedly left. We tried calling him back repeatedly but he never returned our calls (he's not dead or anything, I checked).

My brother used to see the number 64 pop up everywhere. It's because he was looking for the number 64. I picked another number and pointed it out whenever it appeared and he kind of got the point.
