I'm looking at a Dell projector and was wondering if they had a retail outlet or chain that they went through for customers to try out items like a projector. I just need to see if their 'lightweight' model is bright enough for me...
Thanks,
Mike

Dell has kiosks in some malls, but they do not sell through retail stores. The kiosks are just for ordering product and they don't stock anything there. I don't know about their projectors, but their printers are rebranded Lexmark units, with modifications, so you have to buy the cartridges from them.

There's a Dell Kiosk in the local mall here, but they mostly have computers and LCD TV's, not projectors. AFAIK, they only have these kiosks, not full-blown stores like Apple. And IIRC, you can't actually buy anything from them, all you can do is testdrive a PC, and if you like it, use their web connection to order it from dell.com .

Dell is currently testing retail stores. However, you can only test products in them just like the kiosks. You still won't be able to buy anything and walk out the door with it.

Gateway tried and failed with that approach. If I'm going to make the effort to head down to store to buy a computer, I want to be able to head home with said computer. After all I can look online and then order online why go to a store? Heck Dell's claim to fame was that it had low overhead because it was mail order and so the computers were lower priced. What's going to happen now that added the overhead but not selling the product through the stores?

Because after so many years of figuring out how to survive on making pennies per sale, Dell has killed off almost all of its competition. That is to say, they can afford retail stores now because they are the killer brand after having killed off the killer brands of yetseryear.

Thanks everyone... I'm going to have to try out their return policy. They have two projectors at the same price... One is an ultra light at 1500 lumens max and the other is at 3000 (actually 2500 from reviews) lumens max.
I would prefer the smaller one but I need to see if it's bright enough for the room it'll be in. Sigh...

Screens also have luminosity ratings so if you have a room with high ambient light you might consider a very bright screen to let you get by with a more afordable or smaller projector. The right screen can make all the difference.

Dell makes a lot of their stuff, and a lot of the stuff they don't "make" is produced to their specs. This is not always a good thing, as they have a bunch of computers that use non-standard motherboards and cases, locking the owner to Dell's upgrade path for that machine - which is usually "buy the new model." But they do make tons of stuff.
