Hi everyone. I need some career advice. I have 6 months tech support experience and will soon have my MCSA (Microsoft Certified Systems Admnistrator). I also have a four year degree in computer science. First of all, anyone know a good web site with discussions on IT jobs? I've seen a few, but the forums are always slow.

I want to do systems admin type of work. I am in Atlanta now, but would like to move to a smaller place, like Austin TX, Boise, ID, or Oklahoma City, OK. First off, do you think it's possible to have a successful IT career if you don't live in one of the largest cities? It is hard enough to get started as it is.

Secondly, I see millions of jobs for programmers, but not too many for systems admin/ tech support. Would it be wiser to move into programming? I saw recently that both programming and systems admin jobs are set too grow well over the next ten years, yet there aren't that many systems admin jobs on Dice.com, and almost no entry level ones.

Any ideas for getting started?

Austin TX is a pretty happening place for high-tech companies. The other two not so much.

Out of curiousity, why get a computer science degree if you'd rather do system administration or programming?

Well, I wanted a college degree anyway.

So, you think there will be admin jobs there? I guess wherever you have computers, like tech companies, you will have admin jobs.

Plenty of jobs there. I know people who do system administration in Austin (both locally and telecommuting).

Awesome, thanks. I am getting good statistics on the Web and it appears you make the same in Austin as lots of larger cities like Atlanta (at least for IT). I just don't want to be stuck in a place where jobs are harder to get but Austin sounds perfect.

If you've got decent Mac experience (especially OS X Server), I've got a job opening in the Des Moines area. Send me a resume.
