This dude just blew my mind. Very cool reggae tunes.....never been a reggae fan, so to speak, apart from the occasional Bob Marley tunes in my library.... but i turned on the TV this morning while making some breakfast. And on comes this orthadox Jewish dude... doing reggae !!!! And he can flow !!!

So i was like... ok a novelty act....a dude trying to do something diferent, and banking on shock value rather than actual talet. Boy was i wrong. This dude's got talent.... and his lyrics (which i looked up) are spiritually motivated, so there is deeper meaning there.

If you havent already, check out the song/video "King Without a Crown" that can be found on iTMS.

Enjoy !

I liked him for quite a while, but the biblical lyrics got old for me. He's very talented though, no doubt.

Reggae ( at least the roots variety ) is all about biblical lyrics and such. Something about Rastafarians believing that Haile Selassie was the black messiah, the last of the so called Solomic Dynasty of kings going back to the big S himself. But the point is the Ethiopian Orthodox church shares a lot with Judaism, and indeed I've heard Rastas claiming they were the lost tribe of Israel, or something. Anyway the jewish themes are pretty heavy in reggae already. Nothing new there.

However, this kinda neo-psuedo ragga reggae fusion isn't my cuppa, but the guy is a bit better than the gimmick I took him for originally.

Agreed. Live at Stubbs was recorded 3 weeks after Matisyahu was in the top 20 on the AP newswire (March 20th, 2005.....i remember it because I saw him that day, and i was shooting with some press).

Since then, he has gotten waaaaay bigger, and lost a lot of his sound to hich-priced record producers (and some say he has a drug addiction now). But the old stuff is good, such as Shake off the Dust.. and Stubbs

I have seen him live and still don't like the live at the stubbs as much as his other albums. Lots of interesting interviews and such if you search google/youtube.

In 2004 I went out for pizza with Mitisyahu when he was in Boston. We're part of the same flock (Orthodox Jews) and about 10 of us went to the kosher pizza place on a Sat night after his concert. I am not much of a fan of his music, but he's a super nice guy.

+1 Matisyahu

Saw him at Splendour In the Grass and got blown away too. Funny how an orthodox jew managed to do what christian's fail so miserably at: religious music with a universal appeal.

You people can actually understand what he's saying? I hear "Jerusalem" and "...right hand supposed to..."

Ugh.

That's why he's gonna kill us. So we got to beat it. Yeah. Before he let's loose the marmosets on us."

Jerusalem lyrics

[Chorus]
Jerusalem, if I forget you,
fire not gonna come from me tongue.
Jerusalem, if I forget you,
let my right hand forget what it's supposed to do.

In the ancient days, we will return with no delay
Picking up the bounty and the spoils on our way
We've been traveling from state to state
And them don't understand what they say
3,000 years with no place to be
And they want me to give up my milk and honey
Don't you see, it's not about the land or the sea
Not the country but the dwelling of his majesty

[chorus]

Rebuild the temple and the crown of glory
Years gone by, about sixty
Burn in the oven in this century
And the gas tried to choke, but it couldn't choke me
I will not lie down, I will not fall asleep
They come overseas, yes they're trying to be free
Erase the demons out of our memory
Change your name and your identity
Afraid of the truth and our dark history
Why is everybody always chasing we
Cut off the roots of your family tree
Don't you know that's not the way to be

[chorus]

Caught up in these ways, and the worlds gone craze
Don't you know it's just a phase
Case of the Simon says
If I forget the truth then my words won't penetrate
Babylon burning in the place, can't see through the haze
Chop down all of them dirty ways,
That's the price that you pay for selling lies to the youth
No way, not ok, oh no way, not ok, hey
Aint no one gonna break my stride
Aint no one gonna pull me down
Oh no, I got to keep on moving
Stay alive

[chorus]

It's not so much about what the words are -- it's about not being able to understand them while the song is playing. It's just me, of course, but I don't want to have to *try* and understand the singer, nor do I want to have to read their lyrics in order to understand what's being said.

Just me, though.

It's not hard to understand the lyrics to that song at all. They're inspired by King David's Psalms, so that song may not be what you're into. Some of his other popular songs have less Jewish religious content, so you may enjoy them, or his music may not appeal to you generally. It's a positive thing, in my opinion, that our popular culture can embrace the religiously themed music of a Hasidic Jew, but not everyone will like it.
